2The Daily Tar HeelTuesday, February 23. 1982 Meetin, ' Whorehouse' falls short to promo WiuMWm freeze 37 By MARC ROOI H AwiMunt Arts Editor The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, the third production in the Carolina Union's Broadway on Tour series, was disappointing in many respects. The musical score had only a few memorable songs (I heard a man humming the "Star Spangled Banner" after the performance, not a song from the production), the plot is almost nonexistent and the cast mem bers performed as if they were greatly in need of a rest. The music and lyrics, by Carol Hall, were not totally without merit. "Hard Candy Christmas," the song which echoes the feelings of the girls as they finally leave their former "place of em ployment," is at once touching and in vigorating. Two other numbers stood out, al though perhaps more because of the in teresting and accomplished vocal qualities of the performers rather than the songs themselves. "Doatsey Mae," as por trayed and sung by Jan Buttram, was a look into the life of the girl who "wanted to, but never could." Susan Beaubian, as Jewel, was the epi tome of big, bold and brassy in "Twenty four Hours of I ovin'." Her presence and voice were enjoyable in spite of the weak song. The only moment of real interest was the action conjured up by the perfor mance of Patricia Rourk as Shy. Her transformation from the homely outcast to self-confident prostitute was just short of magical. The rest of the cast was, for the most part, forgettable. Darleigh Miller as Miss Mona, the madam of the house, was not particularly grating, but she failed to create a character which went beyond her occupation. , Christopher Wynkoop as Sheriff Dodd offered a weak singing voice and an Un sure characterization, while the characters of the mayor, the governor and the senator all faded into one unpleasant caricature. The audience cannot help but feel cheated by Lawrence Miller's arrange Back To School Sale 20-50 OFF Selected Athletic Shoes Nike Brooks Adidas Tiger E.B. What differentiates Miss Mona's establishment from perhaps other similar ones are her dormitory-like regulations and her insistance on being a mother rather than a madam. Thus this stark atmosphere is inappropriate for the warm atmosphere necessitated by the script., . Tommy Tune's musical staging is somewhat disappointing and deprives the audience of an all-out accomplished dan cing feat. The direction by Tune and co author Peter Masterson is satisfactory but far from inspired. By ANNA TATE Staff Writer A public meeting will be held at the Community Church in Chapel I Ull in an effort to get the United States and the Soviet Union to eze the testing and production of nuclear weapons, tonight at 8. In an auemnt to aid the growing segment of the religious community concerned with the build-up of nuclear weapons around the world, several religious groups in Chapel Hill have become active participants in a "freeze campaign." One of these groups, the Fellowship to Reverse the Arms Race, is an interdenominational group sponsored by the Chapel Hill Ministerial Association. "The group's focus is on arms control, but particulariTy on arms reduction," said Bob Phillips, coordinator of FRAR. "President Reagan has scared a lot of people," he said. "I think his casual talk and foreign policy based heavily on verbal confrontation have many people concerned. The past year has height nei' awn 'vs iiias me people don't like what they hear." . However, not all church leaders favor the disarmament move ment. "There are other things that demand priority," said the Rev. H. Lamarr Mooneyham of Durham, president of the N.C. Moral Majority." v "I would rather see the mainline denominations begin to be concerned with abortion on demand and other things set forth in the scriptures," Mooneyham said. "Nuclear proliferation is' not found in the Bible." Mooneyham said that as long as the Soviets build arsenals, he would encourage his people to do the same in the name of free dom. :, I . .V.--V."". CGC members will elect members to these committees at their regular meeting Thursday. The new CGC will also elect a speaker, speaker pro tern and com mittee chairpersons on Thursday, just three days after its first meeting. "We're going to have to without even having met each other elect these officers," said CGC member Lori Dostal (District 5).- Martin outlined the budget process fori the new CGC members, saying they should become familiar with the groups which presently receive council funding. The new CGC will begin re viewing organizations' requests for money in March. "The biggest thing you have to do is a budget process and that's the first thing you have to do," Martin said. Returning CGC member Phil Painter said the budget process may be difficult for the new members, but that the three returning members will be able to alleviate the difficulties.
