The North Carolina gymnastics team
will face N.C. State for the second time
this season at 8 tonight in Carmichael
Auditorium. This will be the last home
meet for senior co-captains Diana Cates
and Tiffany Terranova.
This is only the Second year N.C. State
has fielded a varsity gymnastics team.
With only five women on the team last
year, they were still able to compete in the
regionals.
UNC and N.C. State met in a tri-meet
at Raleigh on Feb. 3 in Reynolds Cdli
seum. The Tar Heels won that meet with
a team total of 133.35. Maryland placed
second with 132.75 and N.C. State fol
lowed with 127.9.
Sophomore Karen Kaiser led the Heels
with 34.85 total points. SheTinished first
in the balance beam, floor exercise and
tied for second in the vault to capture the
all-around title.

point victory, followed by West Virginia
in second place with 136.60. UNC scored
133.45, one of its highest all-around team
scores of the year.
The highest all-around individual finish
for the Heels was Terranova, with an 8.6
on the balance beam. She placed 10th in
the total scores, behind Robinson's ninth
place finish. Kaiser was the top all
around competitor for the Heels, finish
ing sixth with 34.10.
The Heels will travel to East Tennessee
State March 6 before competing in the
NCAA Southeast Regionals March 12-13

UNC miler Todd McCallister and pole
vaulter Chris Mand each won their
respective events Sunday at the" Delaware
Invitational track meet in Newark, Del.
In the process, both qualified to compete
in the NCAA National Indoor Cham
pionships March 1213 in Detroit.
McCallister, a senior from Chicago,
jan the mile in 4:05.2. Mand, a junior
from Dublin, Ohio, vaulted 16-9 V ,
breaking his own school record.
In other Tar Heel performances at the
Delaware meet Mike Kominsky placed
fourth in the 880-yard run in 1:54.59,
Glenn Sparrow was fifth in the two-mile
in 9:09.12 and Joan Nesbit placed fifth in
the women's mile in 4:57.89.
The Delaware Invitational featured in
dividuals from schools such as Maryland,,
Pennsylvania, N.C. State, Temple,

Earlier in the indoor season, Lisa
Staton qualified in the long jump and
60-yard dash, Chris Arends met the na
tional high jump standard and Nancy
Radford qualified in the mile run. Staton
also qualified recently in the long jump
with a mark of 20 feet.
The women's nationals will be held
March 12 13 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Track coach Hubert West said that five
is the most that he can ever remember
qualifying for the indoor nationals. He
noted that for the last three or four years,
only one athlete had qualified each
season.
A last chance qualifying meet will be
held this weekend at Middle Tennessee
State University. West said he wasn't
sure if any other UNC track members will
be sent to the meet.
