UNC to open
By LINDA ROBERTSON
Sports Editor
Numerous championship banners dan
gle above the court in Carmichael Audi
torium, conspicuous reminders of Caro
lina's successful basketball tradition. A
particularly weighty couple, UNC's 1981
NCAA and 1981 ACC Championship
banners, hang from the same beam.
"Notice how we tacked Tournament'
below the 1981 ACC Championship ban
ner to clarify that we didn't win the ACC
regular season title last year," UNC coach
Dean Smith said Tuesday at a press con
ference. "There's a difference between
the two. I think the regular season winner
is more important since that team had
lone it over 14 games as opposed to just
the three in the tournament."
Smith's statement seems appropriate
this year as UNC enters a somewhat anti
climactic ACC Tournament. Even if the
Tar Heels lose to Georgia Tech Friday
they are practically guaranteed an NCAA
bid.
"In the old days we would say the
ACC Tournament was our long-range
goal because that's the only way you
could get in the NCAA tournament, but I
think it's safe to say we're in the NCAA
tournament," Smith said. "Right now
we're concentrating on beating Georgia
Tech as if it were a regular season game."
But Smith is not belittling the ACC
Tournament.
"The nice thing about it is if you have
a bad year and win the tournament, you
can still go on to the NCAAs," Smith
said. "Certainly Wake and State could
secure a bid if they do well this
weekend."
ACC student tickets distributed
Student tickets for the ACC Tourna
ment will be distributed on a day-to-day
basis in Greensboro from a booth outside
the Coliseum. The booth opens at 10:30
a.m. Friday instead of 11:30 a.m., as was
previously announced. Tournament
books, will not be distributed in order to
ensure student attendance at the games. It
is an honor code violation to sell student
tickets, and only the students who won
tickets in the lottery may pick them up
with their ID card.
Refunds are available at the UNC ticket
office. Tickets turned in will be dis

This year's tournament also is signifi

jockeying for positions in the NCAA
playoffs. If UNC and UVa. meet in the
finals, the winner could take the coveted
i top seed spot in the Eastern Regionals in
Raleigh.
"My guess is that one will be in the East
and the other will be in the Mideast,"
Smith said.
Michael Jordan, who was hospitalized
Saturday with a peritonsillar abscess, has
improved considerably and will leave the
infirmary Thursday.
"He's missed valuable practice time,
but I imagine if he suits up we'll start him
Friday," Smith said.
' While Smith and his players are ap

were part of the regular schedule, they ac

a spellbinding effect on all those in
volved. "Before the tournament last year I
didn't really know that much about it
since it's pretty much a regional thing,
but I really got caught up in it," said Sam
Perkins, 1981 Tournament MVP.
"It means a lot to us, and we're pretty
excited about it," senior, Jimmy Black
said. "We have to take things one game
at a time, but if you're playing in a tour
nament you might as well try to win it."
The Tar Heels seem to have come full
circle as they enter the most important
phase of the season. UNC began the year
ranked No. 1, dropped a few notches
when it hit a mid-year plateau, and has
now reclaimed the top spot as the team
heads into the stretch run.

list.
Should the Tar Heels qualify, students
may call or come in person to the UNC
ticket office (962-2296) Monday, March 8
to charge tickets for the elimination round
of the NCAA tournament. Students may
purchase as many as four tickets, but the
office must be provided with ID numbers
for all students.
If UNC makes it to the second round
of the NCAA Regional, students can sign

UNC as a senior in 1980 and now plays
for the Atlanta Falcons. Both are spen

Young teana wants
to be consistent
By JACKIE BLACKBURN
Ass&ant Sports Editor
It's time to break out ice coolers, shorts and sun visors.
Baseball is back in Cary Boshamer Stadium.
While inexperience could dictate early play for Coach Mike
Roberts' team, consistency will be the key word for a successful
1982 season.
"I'm looking for consistency from our total squad," fourth
year coach Roberts, said. "If we are consistent early, we'll get
better later."
Seven freshmen and three returning pitchers will vie for posi
tions on Robert's four-man rotation and a probable fifth start
ing spot. :
Sophomore Chris Kahler, a walk-on to last year's 38-15
squad, led the Heels with a 7-1 record and a 2.05 ERA. Dave
Droschak, the only senior on the pitching staff, was 4-4 last year
and was second on the staff in strikeouts with 46.
Freshmen Scott Bankhead, Brad Powell and Geoff Redgrave
are also leading candidates as starters. Bankhead, from
Reidsville, N.C, was named National High School Player of the
Year by Easton Bat Co. and Triad 3-A player of the Year, his
senior year. .
Powell, a hard throwing righthander, was drafted by the
Giants in June, while lefthander Redgrave, from Rockville,
Md., was selected by the Indians. - "
Five righthanders and three lefties will work but of the
bullpen. Freshman Steve McGuire has two wins in relief for the
Heels so far this season, one win coming against perenially top
ranked Miami.
One area where Roberts is sure to find consistency is the in
field, which returns intact from last year. The double play com
bination of shortstop Chris Pittaro and second baseman Mitch
McCleney set a UNC record with 61 DPs last season and can be
counted on to add strength up the middle.
Pittaro, the only switch-hitter on the team, hit .276 and stole
22 bases in 26 attempts. McCleney was a leading hitter on the
squad with a .319 average. y-.;
Junior Pete Kumiega, who had a .331 batting average and
collected 8 home runs and 43 RBIs, will return to first base and
share designated hitter duties with Bill Gallagher. Gallagher
switched from pitching after arm surgery his freshman year. ,
On the other corner of the diamond, will be sophomore Jeff
Hubbard. Freshman Jimmy Thrift and Tim Koch will serve as
utilitymen for the infield.
Three regulars also return to the outfield: Shawn Dean in left,
x Greg Schuler in center and Barney Spooner in right.
Dean, who had experience on left field last year, sustained a

bruised hip in the Miami series, so Thrift and John Marshall will
also be platooned in left. Marshall will also be used as a
designated hitter.
A second-team All-ACC outfielder last season, Schuler set a
team high with 26 steals, while hitting .292 and fielding .992 with
U9putouts.
Spooner, who played left last season, will have help from
Todd Wilkinson in right field. Wilkinson has switched from
catching and has make much improvement in the field.
Behind the plate, senior Tom Daily and freshman Tim McGee
are excellent defensive players and will share starting duties.
"We believe we have the players to take us into national com
petition," Roberts said. "It will be difficult to replace quality
players such as Scott Bradley, Mark Ochal, James Parks and
Joe Reto, but I think some of our young players will be capable
of filling those areas."
"We had good things show up in Miami," Roberts said.
"Several of the freshmen played very well. Certainly we have
got to give these young men experience. By the time we get to
ACC competition, they will be able to greatly contribute."
