4The Daily Tar HeelThursday, March 18, 1PQ? TUNC students involved in, minor plane crash By LAURIE BRADSHER Staff Writer A plane carrying 15 members of the UNC Scuba Qub crashed Friday, March 12, before takeoff from Bimini, the Bahamas. No one was injured. The group was heading for Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. after a five-day diving trip when the 1943 model DC-3 pro peller plane left the runway, leaving "one wing dragging in the sand and cutting off the grass," said Paul Tuck, a senior scuba club member from Buies Creek. Tuck said there were no radio communications bet ween Bimini and Ft. Lauderdale, and no rescue service or runway lights. "All of a sudden, we looked out the window and saw the runway to our left and a lot of grass and trees. 'I think you missed the runway,' I said kind of loud," Tuck said. "We walked halfway back to the airport and had to wait for a private plane to get to Ft. Lauderdale and tell them what happened," he said. Richard Cecelski. a sophomore from Havelock, said "We went off to the right and I saw just a bunch of grass (while he wasl Jookine down. "I tried to tell myself it was a side runway." But the back wheel of the plane had broken and when the pilot put on brakes, one side of the plane locked up. "A lot of people were just freaking out," Cecelski said. "It really was close to being really bad." Two or three hours later, a similar plane picked up the passengers and headed for Ft. Lauderdale. "Everybody started cheering and clapping (upon takeoff)," Tuck said.
