Football Club suits up Now that basketball season is almost over, people are beginning to turn their attention to other sports. Like football. Football? American soccer, pigskin passing, etc.? Yes, and it's not the UNC varsity out for spring practice. This group of players belongs to the UNC Football Club, and they are out for fun as well as their league cham pionship. IM's 8l Clubs BY MORRIS HAYWOOD "I equate having fun with winning," Guha Shankar, a senior defensive back, said. "I want to have fun, but when I go out on the field, I want to win." Shankar, a radio, television and motion pictures and political science major from Charlotte, has been with the club since his freshman year. "This is the only outlet for guys to play contact football besides the varsi ty," he said. "It's for the guys who don't have the time or the talent to play varsity or JV football." Kris Kaiser, a senior economics ma jor who is also a defensive back, agreed. "It's mostly for fun," he said. "We don't practice every day. We don't have the time for that." Kaiser said that the main season for the club is in the fall. The spring, he said, is for recruiting and buildings Shankar said the club scheduled three games during the spring. "We haven't lost a spring game in four years," he said. "It's a way to ac quaint the players with the idea of hit ting, and to teach those who have never played before." He said his most memorable moment came two years ago when the club played the Appalachian State club in the playoffs. "We were down 21-0 in the first half," he said. "We came back in the second half, to take the lead, 28-21. They scored with one second to go, and tried a 2-point conversion. We stopped them and won." Lattimore said the club used an I formation on offense and stresses the basics on defense. "learning formations like the veer would just take too much time." he said. "Many of the guys played in high school. But we do have people who've never played before." Shankar is one of them. "Putting pads on for the first time is a unique experience," he said. "It's a slow lear ning process, but I think I'm a better player now than before. There is a lot . of room for improvement, however." The club is financed by the Sports Club Council. "We're lucky if we get $1,000 from the council." Lattimore said. The club began practice Wednes day, but new or interested players are welcome to come out anytime. The club practices from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every day for the first two weeks and will begin practicing twice a week after the first game. ON THE BUSLINE Kugby cruises'i to-.victory-in By FRANK KENNEDY. Staff Writer While most UNC students may have spent their spring break at home watching the ACC Tournament or catching up oh backlogs of homework, the UNC Rugby Club got a pair of tough workouts on the rugby field in Bermuda. The club came away from their one-' week excursion with a couple of victories, and an optimistic outlook toward the-upcoming national championships. The club geared up for next month's Eastern Regionals in Princeton, N.J. by overwhelming a tough Manhattan squad, then held off the stubborn' host team from Bermuda. The club was keyed, as it has been aH year, by the fine performances of Nick Addison, Scott Campbell, Frank Clark son, Jonathan Love and captain Dave McSpadden. Addison kicked several penalties and conversions, and Campbell and McSpad den each added two tries in the first game as the squad broke open a close first half to rout Manhattan 39-12. "Manhattan was well-drilled and knew the game exceptionally well," Love said. "We were a bit intimidated at first, but we got rolling after a while.
