The orientation program involves student volunteers who. serve as Area Coordinators, Orientation and Pre Orientation Counselors and Operations Staff members. These students organize programs and events designed to introduce freshmen and junior transfers to life at the University, said Laura Beaver, co-Area Coordinator for Spencer, Triad and Old Well. . . Orientation will take place Aug. 15-22, and will give new students a chance to adapt and adjust to any pro blems they may encounter before classes begin the next week, Beaver said. There will be some changes in the Orientation pro gram next fall because of the new housing policy that gives freshmen the option of living off-campus, said Brent Lister, Orientation Commission chairperson. "Off-campus freshmen will be given the same status THE SUNDAY SPECIAL We'll give you a 10 discount when you present your church bulletin. 12-5 p.m. WW IMPORTANT MEETING TUESDAY FOR all members of The UNC German Club. 215 Phillips HaO. 8:00 p.au. "They will be told the times and places of the pro grams, but they will not be assigned to a specific counselor." They'll lose some of the personal touch of Orientation by being off-campus," he said. The Orientation Commission recently selected the Area Coordinators and is in the process of selecting Orientation and Pre-Orientation Counselors now, Lister said. "An A.C's job includes planning orientation events and coordinating the activities of the Orientation Counselors," Beaver said. "We and our O.C.s must be creative arid enthusiastic ourselves and also extend our enthusiasm to the freshmen," she said. The Orientation program for junior transfers general ly receives less attention than the freshman orientation program, Lister said. "People don't see Orientation as doing that much for the junior transfers,!' he said. "Only 900 junior transfers are involved with Orientation in the fall, while all enter ing freshmen are involved in the Orientation program." Will OwensAJNC New Bureau Final Four , the program work, Lister said. t ; , "The basic duty of an Orientation Counselor is to get each freshman off to as good a start as possible," he said. "Each freshman will have varying needs and con cerns, both academic and social, and a good O.G should be able to identify and help, solve their problems." The Pre-Orientation program is a support program for minority students and counselors in this program; have slightly different goals. 'Pre-Orieritation Counselors should help minority, students get a feel for what they should expect from the Orientation program and the University in general," Lister said. "We want the students to feel that they have someone to turn to, that they aren't alone at the University." Students involved with the Operations Staff are primarily responsible for directing traffic when students move in, but will also help set up equipment for pro grams like Tar Heel Days, and Freshman Convocation. Orientation is financed with student fees. Each enter ing freshmen pays a $15 Orientation fee, while each junior transfer pays a $7.50 fee. Most of the fees go toward advertising costs and the printing of various handbooks, schedules and mailings, Lister said. DEAN FOUST 4 ktaff Writer In response to the increasing student matriculation to business-related studies, the University Counseling Center and University Placement Services .are co sponsoring a one credit-hour course next fall designed to promote the values of a liberal arts education. The course, "Career Planning for the Liberal Arts Student" (Special Studies 90, Section 3), will be offered to first semester sophomores in an effort to pro mote the practical experience gained through a liberal arts education, said Sherry Stuckey, assistant director for outreach in the UCC and coordinator for the project. . . "There's been a concern that many students in the past few years have been moving toward the practical-oriented courses and majors like business and in dustrial relations," she said. "I think this has concerned the College of Arts and Sciences." "There seems to be, in this day of. economic distress, a move by students to become a business or economics major," said Dennis Whittle, Chairman of the Academic Procedures Committee in Stu-' dent Government. "They feel this assures them they will get a job. People, it seems to us, are using college as a veoational school, as opposed to making it an in tellectual experience. This is something the course hopes to dispel." "Liberal arts provides you with train ing in conceptual organization, writing skills and understanding the concepts of the human mind, something business and economics cannot and does not attempt to cover," Whittle said. "The emphasis of the course is not that the business, economics and industrial relations departments are overloaded and are looking for a safety valve," he said. "The emphasis is to show what ;liberal arts can do for students." The Academic Advising Committee will aid in the course by providing a stu dent intern who will assist in the course by possibly participating on panels and critiquing the course at the semester, end, he said. The purpose of having Student Government involvement was to shift some of the course responsibilities to students, as with the black-white relations '(course'started last year, he said. ' " The tlass will be titight by Jay Pence, an associate professor in the speech department, with assistance from the UCC and UPS staffs. The course will in clude discussions and panels with guest speakers. Students will also be required to conduct an informational interview and do a research project. The course will meet Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in Murphy 105 and registration will be limited to 30 students. A $10 fee will be charged to cover the cost of the reading materials.
