2The Daily Tar HeelMonday, April 5, 1982 PoEed citizens endorse change in dimkin By SUE POWELL Staff Writer Young people are -not completely op posed to raising the drinking age ac cording to the UNC School of Journa lism's latest Carolina poll. According to the poll, 47 percent of people between 18 and 29 favored Gov. Jim Hunt's Crime Commission's pro posal to raise the legal age of purchasing beer and wine from 18 to 21. In the 30 to 77 age bracket, 68 percent supported the proposal. The overall per centage of people wanting the drinking age raised was somewhat lower, 63 per cent, while 33 percent were in opposition, and 4 percent did not know. Why is there such a difference between the age groups? Philip Meyer, one of the journalism professors who directed the survey, said older people have much less to lose than their younger counterparts. Only the younger individuals will be di rectly affected if the bill becomes a law. Another question asked in the poll was, "Which of the following age groups do you think has the most serious prob lem with drunken driving under 18, 18 to 21, or over 21?" Fifty-eight percent of the people polled thought it was 21 and under. Thirty-seven percent said 21 and over. John H. Lacey of the Highway Safety Institute agrees with the results. He has found that younger age groups, such as 18 to 20, have a higher than average per-. In addition, people between the ages of 16 and 30 accounted for 50 percent of the people arrested for drunken driving in the Triangle Area in one year, Meyer said. He offered this information from a soon-to-be released study on drunken driving in the Triangle Area. The younger group also had the highest percentage to say they had driven after having more than two drinks in the pre vious hour. Forty-two percent of the 18 to 29 age group admitted to this, com pared to only 12 percent of the 30 and up division. In response to these results, Lacey said, "Young people may be more willing to confess." Young people also have to drive home more often than older ones after drinking, he said. Of the 18 percent that admitted to drinking and driving, only 40 percent supported raising the drinking age, Meyer said. The poll was derived from 593 tele phone interviews conducted between Feb. 24 and March 4. The numbers were chosen from a random list selected by computer. The poll was conducted in connection with two journalism classes, Research Methods and Advanced Reporting, under the supervision of Meyer and Jane Brown. Police buildim By MARY WILLOUGHBY Staff Writer The Chapel Hill Town Council will advertise this week for bids from parties interested in leasing on a short-term basis the former town police building, said Assistant Town ManagerSonna Lowenthal, While the building, located at the corner of Rosemary and Columbia streets, is not within the historical district of the town, there has been some concern over possible interior or exterior structural changes. According to Lowenthal, the terms of the lease would restrict the tenants from making unauthorized interior renovations or changing the building's facades. Additionally, under the terms of the lease, tenants would be responsible for routine maintenance and repairs, as well as security measures, she said. Production of income is the primary concern of the town in its attempt to lease the building, Lowenthal said. The basic idea behind the short-term lease is to produce income for Chapel Hill while preventing the decay and deterioration of the building. The town desperately needs additional public library office and meeting space, she said. As a result, the town will evaluate such needs before granting a lease for the building. "Since we have this resource (the former police building) we need to keep this in mind," Lowenthal said.
