2The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, April 28, 1982 Health officials say Hotel Europa pastries possible transmitter of viral hepatitis By SARAH RAPEFt Staff Writer Orange County Health Department of ficials issued a general advisory statement last weekend to persons who ate pastry at the Hotel Europa restaurant between April 6 and April 20, said Jerry Robin son, director of the department. "There was one employee in a kitchen separate from the main hotel facilities confirmed as having viral hepatitis type A," he said. A call from the co-workers.' physician was the first information the health department received about the situation. Robinson said there is a low-risk possibility of transmission of the disease through the uncooked portions of the pastry, such as the whipped cream. Because there is no specific immuniza tion against hepatitis, Robinson recom mended a human-immune globulin, available at hospitals, the local health department and Student Health Services. "Once you start' showing the symp toms, it's too late," he warned. The in cubation period lasts 15 to 50 days, he said. Robinson said the health department has received many inquiries from con cerned persons, but has reported no il lnesses. Bob Page, public relations consultant for the Hotel Europa, said the health department notified the hotel of the pro blem late Saturday night. "We called a meeting with the health department Sunday and , we have been cooperating with their investigation," he said. Page said all pastries were destroyed as employees who contracted the disease have not been in the hotel since April 20. "The hotel is not legally responsible because it has not violated any health laws and is not guilty of neglect," Page said. "We're responding to this problem out of concern for our employees and customers." All ads must be prepaid. Deadline: Ad must be received by 12 (noon) one business day before publication.
