NEWS lacrosse From page 1 goal on a fastbreak assist from Brent Voelkel. Voelkel lead all players with three assists. At halftime the score was Wingate 4, Hop kins 1. Midfielders Peter Voelkel and Jeff Homire scored the first two goals of the third quarter to stretch UNC's goal advantage to five, at 6-1. Hopkins generated some momentum by scoring the next two goals on shots by Don nelly and Bill Cantelli. Wingate scored again with eight seconds left in the third period for his fifth goal with an assist from Kevin Criswold. Both teams stuck with the slower tempo in the final quarter, but Hopkins' last two goals were not enough to catch the Heels. Cox was quick to praise the three defen sive starters. "They're great I love playing with them," he said. "I'm glad I have one more year to play with Haus. He's the best there is." Sears made the game's most exciting de fensive play late in the final period. Cook was waiting to catch an outlet pass from goalie Brian Holman when Sears charged out of the cage after him. Cook caught the ball and was making his move when Sears leveled him with a ferocious check. The ball flew out of bounds and Sears, on his knees, raised clenched fists in triumph as the referee signaled Carolina's ball. Holman had a good day in the goal for Hopkins, making 20 saves. UNC attackman Mike Burnett, who had two assists, acknowl edged the play of Holman. "We had some good shots in the first half and only scored four goals," he said. "Brian Holman was playing a fabulous game." Carolina's All-America midfielder Doug Hall, who had a goal disallowed in the sec ond quarter because he went over the crease was all smiles as he cooled off with a victory Budweiser. "They said we couldn't beat 'em three times," said Hall. "They tell us we can't beat 'em the first time or the second. They tell us that both times were a fluke. "Flukes don't happen three times."
