Kelvin Bryant rushing against Virginia last season
By BOB HENSON
Sports Editor
Seven North Carolina football players
have been named to the preseason All
Atlantic Coast Conference team.
Topping everyone's list was Kelvin Bryant
Bryant, a senior from Tarboro, N.C, rushed
for 1,015 and scored an amazing 18 touch

knee injury.
Other Tar Heels named to the squad were
offensive guard Ron Spruill, defensive tackle
William Fuller, defensive back Greg Poole,
linebacker Mike Wilcher, defensive back.
Walter Black and offensive guard Dave
Drechsler.
There were five unanimous selections by
the league's coaches: Bryant, Fuller, Poole,
Terry Kinard of Clemson and Eric Williams
of N.C State.
1 Mike West, who played on Carolina's golf
team last spring, won the 68th Carol inas
Coif Association amateur championship last
weekend at Isle of Palms, S.C.
West defeated Clemson's Norman Chap
man at the Wild Dunes. Golf Links. Earlier
this summer, the Burlington native claimed
the North Carolina Amateur. With his vic
tory last weekend, West becomes only the
second player to hold both titles in the same
' year.
North Carolina swimming coach Frank
Comfort will coach a U.S. national team in a
dual meet with the Soviet Union next month
in Knoxville, Tenn.
Comfort was selected for the honor by
U.S. Swimming, which conducts amateur
swimming in the United States. The meet is
scheduled for Aug. 26-28.
UNC has a new athletic fitness director,
Mike Marks, who will replace Charles Wad
dell. Waddell has resigned to pursue a
master's degree in business administration at
UNC
. Marks, from Richardson, Texas, comes to
Chapel Hill from the University of Alabama
where he served five years as strength train
ing and conditioning coach.
His job at Carolina will be to develop
strength and conditioning programs for all
athletic-teams. Marks is a 1974 graduate of
Oklahoma State. While at OSU, Marks
played football and participated in track.
jim Thacker, long-time announcer- for
ACC basketball, will be switching con
ferences next season. Thacker will be doing
play-by-play for the Big 10.
Over the years, Thacker has become
somewhat of a permanent fixture in ACC
basketball along with Billy Packer.
Thacker has been contracted by Metro
Sports, which lost the ACC contract to Ray
com Productions of Charlotte. Thacker said
that Raycom offered a salary considerably
lower than the one offered by MetroSports.
No replacement for Thacker has been nam
ed as of yet.
