Topping everyone's list was Kelvin Bryant Bryant, a senior from Tarboro, N.C, rushed for 1,015 and scored an amazing 18 touch downs in just half a season. The Heisman late in the season after recovering from a knee injury. Other Tar Heels named to the squad were offensive guard Ron Spruill, defensive tackle William Fuller, defensive back Greg Poole, linebacker Mike Wilcher, defensive back. Walter Black and offensive guard Dave Drechsler. There were five unanimous selections by the league's coaches: Bryant, Fuller, Poole, Terry Kinard of Clemson and Eric Williams of N.C State. 1 Mike West, who played on Carolina's golf team last spring, won the 68th Carol inas Coif Association amateur championship last weekend at Isle of Palms, S.C. West defeated Clemson's Norman Chap man at the Wild Dunes. Golf Links. Earlier this summer, the Burlington native claimed the North Carolina Amateur. With his vic tory last weekend, West becomes only the second player to hold both titles in the same ' year. North Carolina swimming coach Frank Comfort will coach a U.S. national team in a dual meet with the Soviet Union next month in Knoxville, Tenn. Comfort was selected for the honor by U.S. Swimming, which conducts amateur swimming in the United States. The meet is scheduled for Aug. 26-28. UNC has a new athletic fitness director, Mike Marks, who will replace Charles Wad dell. Waddell has resigned to pursue a master's degree in business administration at UNC . Marks, from Richardson, Texas, comes to Chapel Hill from the University of Alabama where he served five years as strength train ing and conditioning coach. His job at Carolina will be to develop strength and conditioning programs for all athletic-teams. Marks is a 1974 graduate of Oklahoma State. While at OSU, Marks played football and participated in track. jim Thacker, long-time announcer- for ACC basketball, will be switching con ferences next season. Thacker will be doing play-by-play for the Big 10. Over the years, Thacker has become somewhat of a permanent fixture in ACC basketball along with Billy Packer. Thacker has been contracted by Metro Sports, which lost the ACC contract to Ray com Productions of Charlotte.
