While the national bike boom has hit some bumpy going
recently after a promising start in the energy-conscious
1970s, merchants and officials report little if any decline in
the popularity of pedaling locally.
Despite media predictions of a bright future for biking na
tionally, only about 0.6 percent of the nation's work force is
traveling to work on bikes, industry analysts expect bike pro
duction .to fall 25 percent this year, according to a recent
Christian Science Monitor report
But locally bike sales haven't been matching that gloomy
prediction uniformly. Tumbleweed Cyclery, 152 E. Main St in
Carrboro, has had a 30 percent reduction in sales so far this
year, according to Dwight Jessup, a store spokesperson. But
at the Chapel Hill Cycle Shop, 203 E. Franklin St., Alfred Reid
reported that sales have increased dramatically over last
year.
"Most customers will spend approximately $250 on a bike,
$30 more than the average cost of a bike," Reid said.
Jessup said his repair business has offset his drop in sales,
though. "Students opt to have their bikes repaired rather
than invest in a new model," he said.
But if some sales slowdowns have occurred, the oppor
tu ;es for serious cycling in the area have been growing

l boro recently completed the "railroad-spur-bikepath"
competing Carrboro and Chapel Hill's McCauley Street The
path, which cost $92,356, will be dedicated in the first week
of September and is part of an expanding network of
bikepaths in the two towns.
Carrboro also has planned a Weaver Street-Main Street
bikepath costing $85,000 that will be completed in mid
September. .
