Worthy and his old teammates now can be seen in many local bars that re play old Tar Hee( games. The Associated Press ATHENS, Ga. All American tailback Herschel Walker underwent surgery Sunday morning to repair a broken thumb that doctors say will keep him from playing football for at least three weeks. The injury to the Georgia running back, which occurred during a practice session Saturday, will keep him .on the sidelines for the Bulldog's season opener Labor Day night against defending na tional champion Clemson. "Playing him would be out of the question for at least three weeks," said Dr. Mixon Robinson, the partner of or thopedic surgeon Dr. William Mulherin, who performed Sunday's operation. . The operation involved inserting wire like nails to stabilize the break in the metacarpal bond near the base of Walker's right thumb. Walker's right arm was immobilized in a cast after the acci dent Saturday Georgia officials were not sure exactly how the injury occurred, although it did happen during a goal line pile-up. Georgia trainer Warren Morris said Walker , apparently ran another play before realizing something was wrong. If Walker attempts to play before the injury heals completely, Robinson said, "there would be a chance of refracture, even with him wearing a cast. If that hap pened, it would require another operation." 9 We Want You! Whether you're a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, The Daily Tar Heel wants you as a writer or artist. You 're sitting in a local bar, casqally sipping your favorite bev erage, when it strikes you that the tele vision set in the joint is tuned to a basket ball game. Basketball in August? Strange and they're wearing Carolina blue uniforms. Hmmm ... that guy has the moves of James Worthy. Another sip, then a closer look ... Heck, that is James Worthy! Yep, you're watching the Tar Heels and Georgetown square off in last March's NCAA finale the one which of .coursCarqlina wqij. fy&'l Several , Franklin Streett establishments , taped The Game, and have broadcast it at the request of patrons. "The version we have of the game is with Woody Durham announcing and no commercials we took out the TV an nouncers," Tom Purdy, owner of Purdy's on Franklin Street, said. Purdy said that, along with the edited version of the game, his program includes a 45-minute feature of Franklin Street ac tivity before, and the pandemonium after the Heels' victory. The segment was taped by three Village Cable Co. cameras, located inside and outside Purdy's and on the roof. "Everybody loves the dunks," Purdy said. "We replay each dunk sometimes 10 times." Once the semester starts, Purdy's will first air the program Wednesday night "around 9 or 9:30," and every Wednes day afterwards, he said. "We're gonna show it off and on." 'Also in the works at Purdy's are a com pilation of all the dunks of the year and Carolina football clippings. Down the street, Four Corners Restau rant shows the game "what seems like all the time," said manager Rebecca Iken berry. "We've shown it every night this week but once," she said. "Everyone from students to towns people all age groups come to see it. It's definitely not restricted to students," Ikenberry said. Anyone can reserve a time to see the game, then a sigrys posted in front of the restaurant the day. of the showing so even more come in to watch, Ikenberry said. Tuesday and Sunday afternoons are the best times for reservations,-she added. "We've got a pretty complete collec tion going back two years," Ikenberry said. "We have all the games taped you never know which one might be cru cial." . In addition to all of the basketball games, Four Corners has the 1980 Olym pic hockey victory of the United States over the Russians. "This is a sports oriented restaurant," Ikenberry said. Mr. Gatti's, another restaurant on Franklin Street dedicated to the support of Tar Heel sports, also shows the cham pionship game tape. "This town is so sports-oriented, every body likes to sit and watch Carolina play," Jack Jackson, assistant manager, said. Mr. Gatti's has shown the game 30 to 40 times, Jackson said. "This summer we got people from Dean Smith's basketball camp," he said. "High school coaches from all over the nation met here one night each of the three weeks. We closed down the restau rant for them and played a different game each night: first Georgetown, then Houston (in the semifinals), then Virginia (in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tour nament)." Mr. Gatti's collection of tapes includes major basketball games last year and a portion of the Gator Bowl. "If somebody requests a sports event, we'll play it, unless there's a party,''" Jackson said. "We have a Betamax," he said, "and tape the whole thing, start to end, com mercials and halftime." Ikenberry said of Four Corners: "To me it's strange that people still come in to see that game. And they still get all ex cited." It's not so strange not in Blue Heaven. ft rlff prints 15 off dry mounting -of all our prints 15 off custom framing of all our prints University Northgate Mall fcn rir nfn O ,nr Mali Imi4m) L-tJ bkiafej UkdWJ 286-0386 942-7306 Coupon Empires September JO,-1982 Campus Calendar Fencing team to meet today Campus Calendar, the collection of public service announcements printed each day by The Daily Tar Heel, will resume publication on Tuesday, A.ug. 24.
