Linda K. Kerber, Women's America:
Re focusing the Past.
Mathews, head of the women's
studies program at UNC, is not out to
conquer men, however. She is a scholar
who researches and instructs in
women's roles in history.
This is Mathews' first. year at UNC,
but she is not inexperienced with the
concept of a women's studies cur

Mathews explained that the women's

Elections
Student government
ready for registration

1 Student Government is gearing up for
its voter registration drive in time for the
November elections, and the Town Rela
tions Committee will be registering
students to vote from Tuesday, Sept. 28,
to Thursday, Sept. 30.
' Registration will take place in the lobby
of the Carolina Union from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednes
day, and 1 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.
There are several reasons behind the
drive to register students, said Jeff Whise
nant, Town Relations Committee member
in charge of voter registration.
: "If we have 20,000 votes spread out
across the East Coast, no one's going to
pay attention to us," Whisenant said. "If
we have 20,000 students coming out of
Orange County, legislators are going to
stand up and listen to us."
". Voter registration also is the first step
for out-of-state students to establish in
state residency, Whisenant said.
Students may register to vote in Orange
County if they consider it their home and
are interested in participating in the local
government, said Pat Carpenter, chairper

fer courses dealing entirely with the
study of women, gender and sex roles.
Mathews notes, however, that these
courses are not just for women.
"1 think men should take these
courses too. If roles change for one sex,
. they have to change for the other as
well.'! v
. Mathews' new book was conceived
when Kerber and Mathews met in 1969
at the Berkshire Conference for
Women's Historians. Afterward they
served for five years on the American
Historical Association's Committee of
Women Historians. In reality, the
book's impetus came when Nancy Lane
of Oxford University Press persuaded
the two professors to begin the enter
prise. '
They took on the challenge and
Mathews explained why.
"In the past 10 years so much ex
citing work has been done in women's
son of the Orange County Board of Elec
tions. She said that she was interested in
seeing students vote once they had
registered whether it was in Orange Coun
ty or their home county.
Elections appearing on the November
ballot include those for the U.S. House,
the N.C. House, the N.C. Supreme Court
Justice, Court of Appeals judges and
county commissioners.
Students wishing to register on campus
next week should bring an identification
card with a picture and proof of local
residence, such as a checkbook, phone
bill, class registration or anything with
their local address printed on it.
In addition to new registrants, students
who have registered here previously but
have changed addresses since then can also
inform registrars next week in the Union in
order to be eligible to vote.
Students who are unable to register or
change their registration in the Union may
do so at the Chapel Hill . Municipal
Building, Carrboro Town Hall or any
other registration site in Orange County.
The last day to register or change a
registration in order to be eligible to vote in
November is Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m.

Women 's America is an anthology of
essays which rests on the assumption
that "an accurate understanding of the
past requires women's experiences to be
analyzed with as much care as historians
have normally devoted to the experience
of men."
Women's America contains essays
ranging in time from 1600 to the pre-;
sent. The essays show in a distinct
history of American women the inter
action of four elements:- biology,
economics, politics and ideology.
Mathews' essay "The New
Feminism,'' deals with these categories
in the present times. Her essay is con
cerned with how "greater reproductive
control and longevity, increasing
numbers of wage-earning women within
the labor force, and participation in
various political efforts to obtain

does pot hold up," he said.
Child safety in automobiles is a concern
of the Highway Safety Research Center.
On July 1 , a state law took effect requiring
that all children , under age two who are
traveling with their parent be in approved
child-passenger restraint systems. Center
staff associate John Lacey said that
preliminary results from their crash-safety
tests indicate that the law would prove ef
fective in reducing the number of child
fatalities..
HSRC is also evaluating the effect of
alcohol safety programs on future arrests.
The programs are attended by many per
sons charged with driving while intoxi
catedunder the influence.
One of the many research projects
underway at the department of en
vironmental sciences and engineering of
the UNC School of Public Health, is ex
perimenting with methods for treating
wastewater from coal conversion pro
. cesses. . -
When coal is converted to either natural
gas or oil, a lot of liquid waste is
generated, explained associate professor
Mark Sobsey. "Using a more effective
treatment process, a lot of contaminants
could be successfully removed," thus
reducing the waste toxicity, he said.

Mathews is not new to the book

working on her second book was
writing the book's introduction.' In it
are many generalizations which she said

Of course, Mathews' work in history
is not finished. During spring term, she
will teach History 90 a cnurs dealing
with gender, work and family in the
20th century and public policy issues
relating to those topics. Also, she is now
writing a book with her husband on the
Equal Rights Amendment and the
politics of cultural conflict.
; To Mathews, women's roles in
history are essential in its importance to
both men's and women's social condi
tions of the present.
"You can't talk about changes in
women's roles without talking about the
implications they have for men and
children," she said.

year," Cell said. "As Chancellor Fordham
indicated, we won't be pleased with the
findings: I share his disappointment, and I
hope the faculty also feels this disappointment.
"It's not easy to come up with specific
solutions that will work," she said. "But
this office will be ready to assist depart
ments in every way possible in their hiring
of minority faculty."
