G
unmen kill top Spanish general,
wound
1
The Associated Press
MADRID, Spain Two men firing submachine guns
from a motorcycle assassinated a top Spanish general
Thursday as he was being driven to work on a busy
residential street near Madrid's Arch of Triumph.
The attack took place an hour after Pope John Paul II
left the capital.
Gen. Victor Lago Roman, 63-year-old commander of
the elite Brunete First Armored Division, died instantly,
the Madrid civilian governor's office said. His soldier
driver suffered slight wounds.
Police said they believed the assassins were Basque ter
rorists, but there was no immediate claim of responsibili
ty. Investigators said they found 16 9mm parabellum shell
casings near the general's black sedan. The ammunition is
the type used in the past by RTA-M, the radical military
wing of the Basque separatist organization.
The gunmen sped away through traffic, witnesses told
police.
Socialist Premier-elect Felipe Gonzalez called the killing
"a provocation." He said that if the attackers were trying
to challenge "the new majority chosen by the Spanish
people," his government would "use all means at the
disposal of the democratic state to do away with the
scourge of terrorism."
Gonzalez and his Socialist Workers' Party won an over
whelming victory a week ago in general elections that
guaranteed them a majority in Parliament for the first
time in Spanish history.
Gonzalez said after the victory that "pacification" of
the Basque region and banishing Spain's "coup
mentality" would be Socialist priorities.
The victory was officially certified Thursday. . The
Socialists are scheduled to take power after King Juan
Carlos convenes the new Parliament at the end of
November.
The king, commander-in-chief of the" armed forces and
a backer of Spain's return to parliamentary democracy
following the death of Gen. Francisco Franco in 1975,
rushed to the clinic where Lago Roman's body lay.
He met later at his residence with Gonzalez, outgoing
Premier Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo, the chairman of the joint
chiefs of staff, Gen. Alvaro Lacalle Leloup, and Defense
Minister Alberto Oliart.
All later expressed their resolve to fight terrorism and
support the armed forces.

The Associated Press
DUBLIN, Ireland ' Prime
Minister Charles Haughey's
8-month-old minority government
fell Thursday after it lost a con
fidence vote in Parliament by two
votes.
Three Marxist legislators who
have helped keep Haughey in office
since February switched sides to
protest the government's proposed
cuts in, health spending.
The Dail, or Irish parliament,
voted 82-80 on a motion of no con
fidence introduced by the main op
position Fine Gael Party.
The collapse of Haughey's Fian
na Fail administration means the
Irish Republic must have its third
general election since June 1981.
The new poll is expected on Nov.
25 or Dec. 2.
v The government was ousted after
the three legislators of the Workers'
Party defected and voted with Fine

They were protesting cuts in state
spending on health proposed by
Haughey as part of a package of
austerity measures designed to
revive the Republic's nosediving
economy.
COLOGNE, West Germany
Police Chief Juergen Hosse said
Thursday authorities are seeking
prosecution of nine Turkish leftists
who called off their 16-hour siege of
the Turkish Consulate after being
promised they could ask for
political asylum.
- He also tojd a news conference
that a 10th Turk was arrested on
suspicion of helping to plot the at
tack and the seizure of about 80
hostages Wednesday.
Hosse did not specify what
charges will be brought against the
10, who were being interrogated
Thursday. The gunmen surrendered
early Thursday and released the last
13 of their hostages unharmed.
