When a baseball team is having trouble
scoring runs, the best thing to do is to
play fundamentally sound baseball. The
runs will eventually come.
Tuesday afternoon the runs finally
came for the Tar "Heels as they bunted,
stole and hit their way out of a brief
slump and into the win column with an
11-1 drubbing of the Ohio University
Bobcats.
North Carolina had to rely on the
masterful six-inning relief performance of
freshman lefthander Tim Kirk until the
bats woke up in the late going.

But in the bottom of the fourth, the
Tar Heels got to Ginther for two runs.
After a Scott Johnson single and an Ohio
error, Walt Weiss connected with a two
out single, scoring Johnson and sending
Mike Jedziniak to third base. Then came
the scratching.
On Ginther's first pitch to Drex
Roberts, Weiss took off toward second
base. As soon as Ohio's catcher had re

third, and the relay from shortstop went

In the fifth the Tar Heels made it 5-1
on Pete Kumiega and Scott Johnson RBI
singles, and the rout was underway.
The bottom of the sixth inning was one
that Ohio pitcher Jeff Bush would just as
soon forget. With a four-run lead, the
North Carolina batters, relaxed and just
pounded the ball. Jedziniak led off with
his fifth home run of the season, a line
shot to left field.
What followed was an impressive bar
rage of line-drive hits and Ohio errors,
and when the smoke had cleared, six runs
had been scored and the score was 11-1.

The weather was cold and windy Tues
day when the UNC men's tennis team
took to the courts to play Auburn, and ;
when the final set of the final doubles
match was completed at dusk, the Tigers
had edged the Tar Heels, 5-4.
The loss, coupled with a 6-3 win over
Old Dominion on Monday, gives the Tar
Heels a 10-5 record midway through the
season.
Winning their first six matches, three
by a score of 9-0, the Tar Heels were roll
ing when they met Top-20 Florida State in
Tallahassee, Fla., during spring break.
They lost that match, 6-3.
A win over Vanderbilt was followed by
back-by-back' losses to Top-10 powers
Miami and Georgia, 5-2 and 5-4, respec
tively. Two doubles' matches were rained
out in Miami.
. A break here and there, and the Tar
Heels might have, come away with a cou
ple of very big wins, giving them even
more confidence as they head into the
conference season beginning next week.
"There were lots of three-set matches
we had a chance to win," Coach Allen
Morris said. "Ron Erskine went right to

Georgia which would have given us the

The key to UNC's success has been
solid play down the line. Early season
lineup changes had no effect on the
team's results. Those playing the number
three, four and five positions have com
bined for 10-4 records while numbers two
and six and 8-6 and number one is 6-8.
"I did a lot of switching in the lineup
early because the guys play so even,"
Morris said. "I've pretty much got the
top five the way I want them and I'll
decide on number six by the end of the
week." v
As. it stands now, the top five ranked
are: Ken Ludwig (6-9), Ron Erskine (9-5),
Josh Sarner (8-7), John Grigg (10-5) and
Ken Whitaker (12-3).
Competing for the number six spot are:
Neil Alderman (3-2), Eddie Stewart (3-2),
Jay Pulliam (1-3) and Robbie Bach (2-1).
Both. Morris and the players are op
timistic this can be an outstanding season,
but the schedule ahead isn't easy, Clem
son, Duke and N.C. State lie in wait and
all are formidable powers.
"We've done well," Morris said. "The
boys want to prove how versatile they are
and they can have an excellent year."
