Meek in romantic By JO ELLEN MEEKINS I Staff Writer , It's Tom Selleck to the rescue in his first motion picture, High Road to China, a romantic adventure set in the 1920s. Selleck's damsel in distress, Bess Armstrong, plays Eve Tozer, a spoiled, rich flapper whose life consists of partying and spending money in Istanbul. A friend informs her, however, that she could lose her elegant lifestyle; her father is on an extended trip to Afghanistan, and his business partner wants to havehim declared legally dead in 12 days so that he can claim all of the business' money. In order fosave" Her in heritance, Eve hires Patrick O'Malley (Tom Selleck), his mechanic and his two airplanes to take her to Afghanistan to search for her father. Review Bess Armstrong plays the part of a typical filthy-rich blond, with one exception. She has brains and stamina. She needs them to fly a World. War I plane, escape from Afghanistan, survive illness in Nepal and parade through the middle of a small war in China all with her hair perfectly in place." y." ' Tom Selleck has a few good moments as former World War I flying ace O'Malley, who always needs a drink but always finds a way out of a bad situation. Armstrong and Selleck make a good team. Selleck es pecially will have a prosperous future in film, if only because of his carefree yet heroic appearance. Robert Morley is ridiculous as Bentik, Tozer's business partner. However, Jack' Weston is lovable and hilarious as Struts, O'Malley's mechanic. And Cassandra Gava is sweet as Alessa, an Afghan slave girl who escapes with O'Malley and Eve. . . The most outstanding features of the film are the beautiful scenery and music. As O'Malley's planes journey from Istan bul to China, the viewers see warm, green countryside and the icy, dangerous Himalaya mountains. John Barry's romantic score hints at the love between Eve and O'Malley before they realize it themselves. Although it is not at all realistic, High Road to China is an entertaining film that offers adventure, romance, beautiful scenery and comedy. " "'.
