The women's soccer team won their second national championship; the men's team saw early season victories .fade in the wake of mid season : losses. Meanwhile, swimmer Sue Walsh continued to break national and world records. And then there was basketball. Dean Smith's Tar Heels were able to fight back from early season losses to a 28-8 record and two victories over Ralph Sampson. But in the end, it was the Georgia Bulldogs that sent the Tar Heels to the bench and the na tional trophy found its way to Raleigh.
