I Ms offer fun , com petition for second session

The UNC intramural office is offering a
wide range of activities this session for those
who want to compete, stay fit or just have fun.
Today is the last day to sign up for the first
four sports softball, volleyball, tennis and
racquetball.
Softball and volleyball will be played by men
and women together and will have no residen
tial requirements for team members. All teams
that do not forfeit during the regular season
wUl advance to a single-elimination playoff.
Tennis and racquetball competition will be
offered in men's and women's singles, doubles
and mixed doubles. All participants who play
the required number of opponents, regardless
of winloss record, will advance to a single
elimination tournament.
Games for all four activities must be self
scheduled and play begins on Monday, July
11. -
The entry deadline for golf and basketball is
July 13, with play beginning on July 15. The
smgle-elimination match play golf tqurnament
will be arranged in flights, depending on the
number of entrants and relative scores.
Players may schedule matches for mutually
convenient times, but all play must be at Fin
ley Golf Course.
The format for basketball will be a single-,
elimination, half-court, 3-on-3 tournament to
be played on the outdoor court behind Cobb
Dorm. ' .
The next activity will be ultimate frisbee, a
one-day smgle-elimination tournament sched
uled for Sunday, July 17. According to a bul
letin from the IM-Rec Office, teams for this
event will consist of seven players, "no more
than one of which may be of the canine varie
ty," and "team captains are responsible for
cleaning up after all teammates, if you know
what we mean.

Ultimate croquet, the newest intramural
sport, will be the last summer activity offered.
The one-day tournament will be played Satur
day, July 23 on Carmichael Field. The entry
deadline is July 22.
Pomerantz said Tuesday that the IM-Rec
Office is looking for volleyball and softball of
ficials: Officiating clinics will be held today at
the intramural office in 203 Woollen Gym.
The softball clinic begins at 5 p.m., ( the
volleyball clinic at 7 p.m. '

area briefs
Reserve center John Brownlee announced
last week that he will transfer from UNC this
year to play basketball for the University of
Texas.
The 6-10 junior will sit out the 1983-84 sea
son in accordance with NCAA rules, but he
will still have two years of eligibility remaining.
Brownlee, who is a native of Fort Worth,
Texas, played in 33 games for the Tar Heels
last season, scoring 43 points and pulling
down 37 rebounds.
Ex-UNC star running back Kelvin Bryant,
now of the United States Football League's
Philadelphia Stars, finished his first profes
sional season with 1,442 yards, making him
the league's second-leading rusher behind Her
schel Walker.
Walker, of the New Jersey Generals, carried
for 1,812 yards. Bryant's average of 4.5 yards
per carry, however, was the league's best;
Walker averaged 4.3 yards per carry.
. Bryant ended the USFL's first regular sea
son of play with 17 touchdowns, which also
put him in second place behind Walker who
had 18.
An ankle injury kept Bryant from playing in
the Stars' final regular season game Sunday,
but he should be ready for the team's first
playoff game against the Chicago Blitz on Saturday.
