CGC funds anti-drunk driving program
By DA TREVOR
Tar Heel Start Writer
The Summer Campus Governing Council
spent $399 of the $1,500 it received from first
summer session student activities fees and is
now working on the problem of student drunk
driving and the effects of recent DUI legisla
tion. Summer CGC Speaker Ron Everett (district
13) said that Student Affairs Committee Chair
person; Rebel Cole (district 4) is working on
creating a special student service with the
Shared Ride program. The students would be
able to purchase a card enabling them to get
riders home on Thursday, Friday and Satur
day nights, he said.
"We can do our part to help insure safer
roads in Chapel Hill," Everett said. "It's a
shooting gallery for the police. Hopefully, we
can have it in effect this fall."
Everett said the CGC is also working on a
resolution recommending that the Undergrad
uate Library extend its summer hours immedi
ately before final exams. Everett said the CGC
received complaints from disgruntled students
who were inconvenienced by the library's 5
p.m. closing time the Saturday before first
summer session's Monday exam.
The CGC is also working in conjunction
with the executive branch of Student Govern
ment on a voter registration drive. The joint
committee is preparing now so that they are
"ready to roll when the students get back in
the fall" Everett said.
Summer CGC Treasurer Jack Mohr (district
23) said that $199 had been allotted to send :
Dave Kirkman, a lawyer for Student Legal
Services, to a professional training conference
in Deluth, Minn. Mohr said that the UNC
Sailing Club had also received a $300 loan,
and that the Student Consumer Action Union
had been awarded a $200 chairperson's sti
pend: Last year, the Summer CGC sponsored two
nights of free bowling and a $1 all-campus hot
dog supper for summer school students at a
cost of $631.
