From staff and wire reports -". U
Former UNC running back Kelvin Bryant, whose rush
ing, receiving and blocking helped lead the Philadelphia
Stars to the best record in the United States Football
League's inaugural season, was named the USFL Playei
of the Year last week by The Associated Press.
The Tarboro native rushed for 1,442 yards and 16
touchdowns in his first professional season, second only
to the New Jersey Generals' Herschel Walker in each
category. He was also the Stars' second-leading receiver,
making 53 catches for 410 yards and one touchdown.
Walker, who signed pro football's richest contract in
February, rushed for 1,812 yards and caught 53 passes for
489 yards as the Generals ended the season with a 6-12
record.
Bryant, an introvert off the field, said the honor be
longed as much to his offensive line as to him. "They
open up the holes, and I just run through," he said.
Despite reports that he was injury-prone in college, the
6-2, 190-pound Bryant likely would have been a first
round choice in the National Football League. Instead, he
chose to go with the new league.
"I didn't want to go to an NFL team that already had
good running backs, where I'd have to sit out until I
learned the system," said Bryant. "I might have started,
but I didn't want to take any chances. I knew if I joined
the Stars I would have a chance right away, and I liked the
way they ran the program up here. It was like North
Carolina.
"I think this league is just getting started," Bryant said.
."It's going to take a while because people just don't know
enough about it yet."
Stars' General Manager Carl Peterson said the Stars
had heard "the stuff about 'He's got all the tools, but
. . but Peterson said UNC coach Dick Crum straight
ened that out. , ,
"Dick said he'd had unfortunate, crazy-type injuries,"
Peterson said. "And Randy Walker, his backfield coach
in college, said Bryant has tremendous natural speed.
Plus, he's got a sixth sense, making a change of direction
at exactly the right time, the right place. .
; "People should know that Kelvin played in a physical
game at a physical position," Peterson added. There were
11 people trying to blow his brains up. I always tried to
point out, 'You don't have to worry about Kelvin. When
he can go, he'll go.' "
Philadelphia finished the regular season at 15-3 and
opened the league's playoff with a 44-38 overtime win
over the Chicago Blitz Saturday. Bryant carried 24 times
for 142 yards and two scores, one of which was a 1-yard
dive at 7:02 of the sudden-death period to give the Stars
the victory. They will play the Michigan Panthers in the
championship game in Denver on Sunday. Michigan de
feated the Oakland Invaders 37-21 in their playoff game
last Sunday.

RALEIGH Atlantic Coast Conference
faculty representatives, athletic directors and
institutional heads were expected to discuss
Tuesday whether allegations of racial discrimi
nation will alter the site of the league golf
championship.
Dr. Bruce R. Poulton, chancellor at N.C.
State University; said he and UNC Chancellor
Christopher Fordham had jointly asked the
conference to confirm or deny allegations that
Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount has
racially discriminatory policies.
"Speaking for our respective institutions,
we felt we had an obligation to let ACC Com
missioner Bob James know there was no way
we could support the situation as it has been
portrayed in the newspapers," Poulton said
Monday.
He said a conference telephone call "will
give the conference the chance to report what
it has found, and, depending on the report,
there will be a discussion of the situation and
the options we have."
James said no decision would be made
about the tournament site until the next league
meeting in October. ,
Northgreen's commitment to host the tour
nament until 1986 has been challenged :by
Rocky Mount resident Steve Rogers, who said
the club refuses to allow black members. Rogf
ers, who is black, said he wrote to ACC-of$-cials
last November advising the conference
that the league was enforcing racism by play
ing at the club. . '
Earle Elingburg, general manager at North
green, conceded that the club has no black
members but said he had been assured by
ACC Assistant tarrimissioner Marvin Francis
that the tournament would return in 1984.
"We have told everybody that our basic
membership policy is that we don't have black
members," Elingburg said last Friday. "But
we do feel we're a progressive club in that
blacks have come to Northgreen for private
banquets and parties and have played the golf
course in industrial leagues, high school mat
ches and in the recent North Carolina Amateur."
