6BThe Daily Tar Heel 'Wednesday Anni's.?? 1984 At UNC, look under grits to find pleasant surprise By JENNIFER KELLER Staff Writer People, people, people. From New Bern to New York, from Great Britain to Afghanistan, they come to the nation's oldest state university, choking the arteries of Chapel Hill. Freshmen may feel overwhelmed and, in response, hide their freshness by pretending that they know exactly what they are doing. The pace at UNC is fast and competitive; yet with more than 22,000 students, newcomers are able to sit back and watch. The outgoing find one of many social groups at the University. Others can spend time with a few friends, replacing mixers and beer with softer lights and a nice Beaujolais. It takes time to eet used to some of UNC's quirks. Some Northerners feel culture shock in the face of the Southern life: Southerners talk to strangers, run up stairs to open a door for a lady, and sometimes go to church on a date. Daring to try something different, freshmen may try anything, and the possibilities exist. If not at UNC then the Triangle area has outlets for a variety of interests from poetry reading to African dance to bicycle racing are in the area. Freshmen will find people who have the same interests. Out-of-state students should not worry if they want to charter a plane home back to Connecticut, Massachusetts or Maine when they hear the foreign sounding Southern drawl. The South runs deeper then hash browns, grits and Carolina blue. It just takes some time until its rhythm and culture unveil a pleasant surprise. AflmoiaifocemeMtfs Auditions for the Glee Club are open, to all UNC students. Interested' people should contact Michael Tamte-Horan at 225 Hill Hall or call 962-1039 or 942 4549 for information. The reason: biotin dependency, an inherited birth defect. When Mrs. Whitmore became pregnant again, prenatal diagnosis showed that her second child, Nicole, also had inherited the birth defect of body chemistry. Through a March of Dimes program at the University of California, San Francisco, Mrs. Whitmore began special treatment when she was 23 V2 weeks pregnant. This was the FIRST TIME that a patient with biotin dependency was diagnosed and treated before birth. As a result, Nicole was born free of the disorder. You can help make miracles happen.
