DALLAS Republicans, fired by partisan
portrayals of Walter F. Mondale as the
overpromising candidate of the past, met
Tuesday to provide President Reagan with a
conservative, "red, white and blue" re-election
platform.
The GOP national convention, dominated
by the party's right, wasn't even to hear
moderate dissent about a document that
includes a "no tax hike" promise and language
that the United States must be able to prevail
in any future war.
After the conservatives saw their views
adopted Monday night, the prime time
spotlight shifted to party moderates led by
former President Gerald Ford.
In his speech, Ford continued the attacks
I on Mondale by comparing economic condi
j tions during the Carter administration with the
:- state of the economy today.
Meanwhile, Vice President George Bush met
- with a group from New Jersey and a gathering
; of senior citizens after similar appearances
: Monday before women, blacks and Jews.

Cobey, a former UNC athletic director from
Chapel Hill, is trying to unseat six-term
incumbent Ike Andrews, a Democrat from
Cary, in the 4th Congressional District.
Andrews defeated Cobey with 51.3 percent of
the vote in 1982 after Andrew's conviction for
drunken driving.
Cobey told delegates that the 1903 flight of
a power-driven aircraft in North Carolina by
Wilbur and Orville Wright is a reminder of
"what determination, a brave vision and the
pioneer spirit have accomplished for America
and the world."
He said that spirit remains alive in scientists
working in the state's 4th District, which
includes part of the Research Triangle Area.
More questions for Ferraro
ALBANY, N.Y. The New York state
Insurance Department will ask Rep. Geraldine
Ferraro and her husband John Zaccaro why
they omitted information about a federal
campaign law violation from statements filed
with the department, an official said Tuesday.
However, the department will not attempt
to take disciplinary action against the Demo
cratic vice presidential candidate or Zaccaro
for failing to mention the violation because
"we consider this a minor matter," said
Insurance Department spokesman Kevin
Foley.
Foley said that in signed application filed
in 1979, 1981 and 1983 for an extension of
the insurance broker's license for the New York
City real estate company owned by the couple,
Ms. Ferraro and Zaccaro answered "no" to
questions about violation of law.
MacDonald's judge asked to withdraw
RALEIGH Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald's
lawyer Tuesday asked U.S. District Court
Judge Franklin Dupree to remove himself
from MacDonald's case because the judge's
relative worked for MacDonald's former
prosecuter, but Dupree refused to withdraw.
Dupree has presided over the case since
1975. MacDonald is a former Army captain
convicted in 1979 of slaying his pregnant wife
and two young daughters at their Fort Bragg
apartment in 1970.
MacDonald is seeking a new trial.
Raleigh lawyer Wade Smith argued that
Dupree shouldn't deal further with the case
because his former son-in-law was a member
of the U.S. Attorney's staff when it investigated
the case in the early 1970s.
