1 The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, August 22, 19843A reshmen told to set goals and accept responsibility By GEORGIA MARTIN, Staff Writer Goals. Spirit. Involvement. Responsibility. These were the topics of Monday night's freshmen convocation in Woollen Gym. Orientation Commission chairman Chuck Zeugner welcomed the 1984-85 freshmen class urging them to set goals early for themselves and work toward them. "Happiness at any university can only be achieved by pushing . past your limits," he said. "Don't be afraid to stretch yourself." Donald Boulton, vice chancellor and dean of student, affairs, .emphasized Carolina spirit. "It's the uniqueness of Carolina and its people," he said. "As you make your choices, take it one sten at a time." he said "Ask for help and reach out and get that help." "Assume responsibility," stressed Donald Jicha, dean of the General College. "Attend class. Get involved with University activities. Don't go home every weekend." People are what make Carolina so special, said Student Body President Paul Parker. "You're a part of Carol ina," he told the freshmen. "College is the place to be the person you want to be, do the things you want to do." A slide show, to the tune of "Car olina in My Mind", followed the speeches. Freshman spirit exploded following the show as each residence area group cheered and chanted. Cheers were led by the Carolina cheerleaders. Amid the screaming, Boulton remarked "If only we could ball up the spirit here tonight and spread it through the year when we need it." Some freshmen pick off-campus living By LISA SWICEGOOD StafT Writer Over the summer, freshmen eagerly wait to receive their dormitory and roommate assignments. Getting a first ' choice of dormitories and getting along with a roommate are normal worries. But for those few freshmen who decide to live off-campus, these are not a part of the freshmen jitters. For the third year, freshmen are being allowed to live ofkcampus. Only 75 freshmen chose to live off-campus in 1982 while 100 freshmen lived off campus last year. The number of freshmen living off-campus this year is expected to be small although the exact - number will not be known until the actual registration numbers are com pared to the University Housing place ments, said Collin Rustin, assistant director of University Housing con tracts and placements. The increasing University housing problem did play a part in the decision to let freshmen live off-campus, but Rustin adds: "I honestly feel students should have the choice to decide where to live. This University has always been one of freedom of choice." "Freshman off-campus housing has helped to relieve the tension of the University housing but we still guaran tee freshmen University housing," he said. DTM' DROP SITES Post Office R.O.T.C. F.L.O.B.
