Fuller gets A CC honors
From staff and wire reports
North Carolina defensive tackle William
Fuller was named the Atlantic Coast Con
ference defensive player of the week.
Fuller, a preseason Ail-American, was
particularly effective during the season
opener Saturday against South Carolina.
Fuller applied pressure on Gamecock
quarterback Bill Bradshaw, and deflected
a pair of Bradshaw passes.
Fuller was chosen along with Virginia's
linebacker Charles McDaniel for the week
ly honor.
The University of Maryland Terrapins
have initiated their own sanctions against
the Soviet Union.
In response to last week's tragedy in
volving a Korean plane shot down in
Soviet air space, Maryland Tuesday can
celled a basketball game scheduled against
the Soviet's national team in November,
officials said.
Athletic director Dick Dull notified the
Amateur Basketball Association USA of
his decision to cancel the game, scheduled
for Nov. 20 at Cole Field House.
"The culpability of the Soviet Union in
shooting down an unarmed commercial
plane of South Korea, and their continueH
arrogance and disdain to all legitimate in
quiry from the world community causes
me to conclude that the playing of this
game on our campus, against our inter
collegiate basketball team, would be inap
propriate," said Dull in a statement.
One school official, who asked not to be
identified, said: "I don't think it will be re
played at all. It's an exhibition game. The
last time the Russians were here, there was
a demonstration and oil was thrown on the
floor."
Former North Carolina basketball play
er Lynwood Robinson has announced he's
tr an f erring to Appalachian State this fall,
ASU officials say.
Robinson, a 6-1, 182-pound junior from
Mt. Olive, won't be eligible for the 1983-84
season because of NCAA transfer rules.
But he will be able to play in the 1984-85
season.
"Lynwood Robinson is a great contri
bution to the Mountaineer squad and will
provide greater depth," Appalachian State
head basketball coach Kevin Cantwell
said.
Robinson, a guard, did not score in the
four games he played in for the Tar Heels
last year, and left during midseason.

Devey proves he's OK
By MIKE DeSISTI
Sports Editor
Mark Devey carries around a lot of
hardware on that right leg of his these
days. Starting just below mid-thigh and
creeping down a good six inches below his
injured knee, a screws-and-all brace of
metal and foam is the only thing allowing
Devey on the field this season. But the
sophomore is playing. And for North
Carolina, that's good.
The UNC men's soccer team opened
up its 1983 home season Wednesday with
a methodical 6-0 shutout of visiting
Atlantic Christian College on Fetzer
Field.
Freshman striker Shawn Ritchie
(assisted by Chris Colavita on the first)
and midfielder Chris Connolly (assisted
by John Doyle and John Tate) opened up
a two-goal Tar Heel halftime lead with a
pair of consecutive goals each to put
North Carolina at 3-0 on the year.
Senior Jay Ainslie had opened up the
scoring by converting on a penalty kick
just five minutes into the game, and
freshman Frank Gilhooly pushed that
lead to two with a header on an assist
from John Blum some 15 minutes later.
Junior goalkeeper Bruce Talbot made
five saves in recording the shutout.
But for all intents and purposes, the
real story was Devey. He didn't score. He
hadn't any assists. He took but one shot,
and that, cleared the crossbar by a few
feet. All he did was play, and judging
from the past, that's enough.
It seems like a long time ago, the spring
of 1982, that UNC coach Anson Dor
rance was talking about some kid from
Bethlehem, Pa., who had toured the
world with the U.S. Junior National
team, who could score at will, who was
magic and brilliant and devastating.

Who was Devey.
But what had appeared to be a promis
ing season for both the Tar Heels and the
freshman striker would end only in what-might-have-beens
and rehabilitation.
North Carolina was 8-0-3 after 11
games. Devey was scoring. The Tar Heels
wound up at 11-7-4. Devey wound up
with ligament and muscle damage in his
right knee.
He rested the leg in the spring, lifting
weights and being patient, waiting for the
1983 preseason in August. Then, two
weeks before the start of preseason,
Devey twisted the knee again. The doc
tor's verdict: No brace, no ball. And so
he waited.
He waited a good while, too, putting
the brace on the knee just one day before
Friday's season-opening upset of No. 4
Connecticut, just three days before the
next stunner Devey scored a goal
over No. 15 Boston College.
Devey is doing some adjusting this
season, not only to the brace, but to a
new position and team role as well. He
roams around Fetzer as an outside mid
fielder, knocking the ball off to a team
mate with a deft little first-time flick, or
holding it for a quick touch or two before
sending another teammate goalward with
a through pass.
"I'm a different style of player," he
says. "Now I'm not trying to score all the
goals, I'm trying to set up Billy (striker
Hartman) or Shawn Ritchie.
"I'm just trying to make the offense
go."
Devey sits and ponders the situation
for a while. And then he smiles. "I may
not ever be anywhere near the player I us
ed to be," he says. "But you know what
I'm all right.
"Don't count me out."
