Successful Scottish band
defies musical classification
By GIGI SONNER
Staff Writer
They've toured with Dire Straits in the
Netherlands, and they've played at the
New York Folk Festival. They've drawn
standing room only crowds at rock clubs
across the United States, and they've won
a large Canadian following for their per
formances at the Vancouver, Winnipeg
and Toronto folk festivals.
Neither folk nor rock, The Tannahill
Weavers' music defies categorization.
Chapel Hill will get a chance to hear this
Scottish band's unique sound Friday and
Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the Art School in
Carrboro.
Just as their style crosses the boundaries
between folk and rock, the Weavers'
music, although true to its Scottish heri
tage, has a broad international appeal that
crosses cultural borders. The band has
won critical and commercial success
throughout the British Isles, Europe,
Canada and the United States.
As the warm-up band for Dire Straits,
the Weavers were so well-received that they
were put off the tour when they began to
steal the show.
This is their fifth American tour, which
coincides with the release of their fifth
album, Passage.
Named for the Scottish city of Paisley's
renowned weaving industry and its poet
laureate Robert Tannahill, the group was
formed in 1970 as a traditional Scottish
folk band.
Their early albums include Are You
Sleeping Maggie (1976) and The Old
Woman's Dance (1977). Their 1979 release
The Tannahill Weavers won the Scotstar
Award for record of the year.
But their 1981 album Tannahill Weavers
IV marked a change in the band's sound.
Deciding that the parallel traditions of folk
and rock music were not mutually exclu
sive, the band began to combine elements
of both styles, creating a special blend of
traditional melodies and modern rhythms.
The result is a sound that is uniquely their
own.
This weekend's concerts will also in
clude solo performances by fellow Scot
Dougie MacLean. A member of the
Weavers during their early years, he has
since toured and recorded with the band
Silly Wizard. As a soloist, MacLean has
toured extensively in Europe, Canada and
Australia, performing traditional and
original songs on the fiddle and mandolin.

N.G. Symphony
Society: no deficit
The Associated Press
RALEIGH The North Carolina
Symphony Society, criticizing "incom
plete" press coverage of the issues in an
ongoing contract dispute, issued a
statement Friday.
"The Society and the musicians have
each offered proposals that would
allow the season to start; however,
there are major differences between the
two proposals," the statement said.
"The musicians offered to 'play and
talk' under the provisions of the recent
ly expired contract, but without the 'no
strike' provisions of that agreement."
The Society said a proposed one
week notice before striking was "not in
the best interests of the symphony's au
dience." The Society's counter offer
was to extend the contract during
negotiations while also extending the
non-strike clause. Management said
that was "more likely to lead to a time
ly conclusion of the negotiations."
The Society denied claims that it was
seeking complete authority over the
dismissal of musicians for artistic
reasons, saying that its proposal is
designed to see that the director's deci
sion in such matters is subject to review
by an impartial third-party arbitrator
mutually selected by both the Society
and musicians.
"Arbitration of this crucial issue is a
common practice in other orchestras
around the country," the statement
said.
In connection with selecting a music
director, the Society said, "the Board
of Trustees must retain its prerogative
in selecting the Society's central music
figure and a key member of its manage
ment group." The Society has propos
ed a committee to assure musicians' in
volvement but does not provide veto
power over the final decision of the
Trustees.
Finally, the Society objected to musi
cians' claims that management was not
committed to growth.
"The Society's negotiating team has
clearly stated that the Society and its
Board of Trustees are committed to
growth, s growth in the size of the or
chestra and growth in service to North
Carolina," the statement said.
"We will not operate at a deficit,
however, to achieve these goals," the
statement added. "And therefore we
cannot accept a contract provision that
could force us into a deficit
operation."
