TMosriay S p'ember 20. 1983The Daily Tar Heel7 KB ,TB Volleyball team begins ACC play against Wake By MIKE WATERS SUN Writer The UNC women's volleyball team continued its dominance of the Southeast with a three-game sweep of Appalachian State Friday in North Carolina's season opener. The Tar Heels, coming off three ACC championships and two national tourna ment appearances in just three years, ap pear primed for another successful sea son. Coach Beth Miller returns six players from last year's squad, which posted a 26-13 record and got a berth in the NCAA tournament. The returners in clude the three captains: first-team All ACC selection Donna Meier, second team pick Linda Kantz, and Sandy Schmidt. Miller is setting her sights high again in 1983. "It gets tougher every year," she says. "Our goal again is to win the ACC tournament and to do well in the NCAA." Joining the captains for another season will be senior Mercedes Ballbe, and two sophomores Kim Rose and Krissy Ibach. Miller will be counting heavily on the experience and leadership of the team's captains. "Donna (Meier) is one of our middle blockers and a very good offensive player," Miller said. "Linda (Kantz) will run our offense as the setter. She has good court awareness. Sandy Schmidt is an outside blocker and we need her to have a good season." Four freshmen could also play impor tant roles for the team, which went un defeated against ACC opponents in 1982. Jill Berkebile, from Johnstown, Pa., will probably start or should at least see plen ty of action. Heather Ostrem and Dawn Wood are both strong players competing for starting roles. A fourth freshman, Mindy Kindy, has lost a little time at the start of the season because of a sprained ankle. The Tar Heels' 15-4, 15-10, 15-9 victory at Appalachian State should help prepare the team for a tough ACC schedule which starts tonight with a match at Wake Forest. Five teams have a realistic shot at the conference title this year, Miller said. "Duke was a surprise last year," she said. "They're going to be strong and so will Clemson, N.C. State and Maryland." Of repeating last year's perfect record against ACC rivals, Miller speaks in sub dued tones. "It's tough to do. If someone had told me last year we would do that, ! would have laughed. We will certainly try to duplicate that record, though." If the contest at Wake Forest tonight goes as expected, the Tar Heels should be 2-0 when they host East Carolina in their 1983 home opener in Carmichael Audi torium Thursday night. N.C. State will come to Chapel Hill next Tuesday. The Tar Heels also face some of the na tion's best teams in four tournaments before hosting the first Tar Heel Classic in November. Chances are good that it will be another successful season for the Tar Heels, but the rest of the ACC teams will be looking to put an end to UNC's string of conference titles. As Miller said, "It gets tougher every year." X7 I I I I 9 JL r Luncheon Specials available at lunch 11 to 2 p.m. M-F . Pizza Buffet .....
