Testimony ends in
By STUART TONMNSON
Assistant University Editor
Testimony ended Tuesday in the trial of
a sex-discrimination lawsuit filed by a
former UNC employee who charges that
she was not hired for three UNC School of
Public Health jobs because of her sex.
The suit was filed in 1977 by Helen L.
Urquhart, 63, against the 16-member
UNC system in the U.S. Middle District
Court in Greensboro. Urquhart claims
that she applied for three jobs for which
she was qualified, but that the jobs went to
men.

discrimination suit against UNC
until both parties submit reports to the
court, a court clerk said Tuesday.
Urquhart has until Oct. 31 to submit her
report. The University has until Oct. 18.
The suit asks that Urquhart be awarded
back pay and benefits for any job the
court determined she was illegally denied,
that she be given whichever of the three
jobs that is first available, and that she
receive pay for the job until then.
Earlier class-action and sexliscrirnina
tion suits filed by Urquhart have been
thrown out of court, said Donal Dunphy,
chairman of the family medicine program
in the School of Public Health. He was a
defendant in the earlier suits.

"It is the university's position that Ur
quhart was not qualified for the positions
in question," Dunphy said.
Urquhart testified Monday that she has
the necessary experience for the jobs for
which she applied. Urquhart, who holds a
master's degree from the School of Public
Health, testified that she worked as a
librarian for the former chairman of the
school's family medicine program from
1970 to 1975, but did not have the formal
title.
Dunphy said that he fired Urquhart in
1975 when he took over the program
because he could not determine what her
job was.

Continental Airlines resumed some of its flights at discount
rates Tuesday three days after going to hankruptcy court,
while a union leader denied claims by Eastern Airlines that it
must chop wages by 15 percent to avoid Continental's fate.
. The first Continental DC-9 took off from Houston in the
fog at 7:31 a.m. with six passengers aboard. Billie Tafelski,
who checked in the passengers for the flight, said she wished
she had their addresses "so I could write them a thank you let
ter." Pilots were working at less than half salary and the airline
was flying to fewer than one-third of its previous destinations.
Only 35 percent of its 12,000 employees were on the job.

WASHINGTON President Reagan says that whether
James Watt remains in the Cabinet is a decision Watt win have
to make. By the account of his aides, Watt isn't even entertain
ing the question.
In a newspaper interview published Tuesday, Reagan said
he will not fire Watt. Instead, whether he remains on the job is
"a decision that he himself will have to make whether he
feels he has made it questionable as to whether he can be effec
tive or not," Reagan declared.
Presidential counselor Edwin Meese III later told reporters
that "this is a closed issue" and even if Watt were to offer his
resignation, Reagan likely wouldn't accept it.
MIAMI Tropical storm Dean, the hurricane season's
fourth named storm, formed Tuesday 350 to 400 miles south
east of Cape Hatteras, the National Hurricane Center report
ed. An Air Force weather reconnaissance plane was dispatched
to the area shortly before noon after storm watchers noticed a
low-pressure area "rapidly taking on tropical characteristics."
"It's winding up pretty fast so we'll have to watch it pretty
closely," forecaster Al Gerrish said at the time. .
He reported the storm formation at 4 p.m., and said the
center would issue more details later in the day.
A noon report from the center in suburban Coral Gables
said data gathered by ships in the area indicated the system
already carried gale-force winds.
the Homecoming game was scheduled
against the College of William and Mary

not holding student tickets to attend. The
words "student tickets" should have been
replaced with "season tickets." The DTH
regrets the error.
