4The Daily Tar HeelThursday, September 29, 1983 A comparison of area grocery prices This chart is a biweekly comparative ranking of food prices at local grocery stores compiled by the Student Con sumer Action Union. SCAU checks prices on 43 sample items in five categories and compares the averages. Eight students visit Chapel Hill and Carrboro grocery stores every two weeks to gather the prices. To read this chart, cross-index the store name with a food category column. The printed number indicates the store's rank from lowest to highest in price during this week's survey period. For example, Fowler's has the second lowest price for dairy products, but only ranks sixth for all categories. Category Best Food A&P Food Lion Winn-Dixie 1 2 6 Produce Dry Goods Meats Frozen Dairy Total 5 3 1 3 7 34 5 7 6 6 5 2 1 3 1 1 1 4 2 4 3 34 Kroger 3 2 4 2 4 2 Fowler's 4 7 6 7 2 6 . County Commissioners to vote on animal control By SALLY SMITH StaH Writer Orange County Commissioners will vote Monday night on proposed amendments to the animal control ordinance. "Orange County doesn't have a good or even adequate animal control ordinance," said Jerry Robinson, county health department director. The county's ordinance is inadequate for roaming and biting dogs, he said, and represents the minimal regulations set by the state. The proposed ordinance includes prohibiting owners from allowing animals to create a nuisance by damaging property or being dangerous to the public. It also prohibits animal abuse and requires citizens who injure animals with motor vehicles to notify the owners, sheriffs office or animajhelter. Violators of the ordinance would be subject to a $25 fine, which would double if not paid within three days. Certain in fractions would result in animal impoundment at the owner's expense. Public debate on the amendments was heard by the com missioners on Sept. 6 and Sept. 20. Citizens in favor of the pro posals saw it as a measure to protect neglected animals, as well as people and property. The Animal Protection Society of Orange County finds the proposed ordinance very appropriate, said Dr. Robert Green berg, a member of the organization's board of directors. Some citizens at the public hearings said they felt some rural parts of Orange County should be given fewer restrictions than the more populated areas. However, during the period from March 1982 to February 1983 the health department received calls to investigate 2,136 complaints from the unincorporated parts of the county, Robin son said. During this period, 115 people were bitten, i The county brings in about 350 dogs a month to the animal shelter from rural areas, Robinson said. ; After the hearing on Sept. 20, the ordinance went to a com mittee for final consideration. The committee included Robin son, APS representatives and the county attorney. "The responsible animal owner, rural or city, will have no problem with the ordinance," Greenberg said. The commissioners' meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the county courthouse in Hillsborough. & DMSUM OWNERS If you believe in quality, you'll believe in PRECISION MAINTENANCE We offer you no "superdeals "special," or "bargain" tuneups and services. It's real ly a shame that Homecoming was made such a farce. It's something everyone gets really excited about, and it shouldn't have been made a sham." Becky Sillmon, sophomore, political science major, Greensboro: "When I first heard about it, I thought it was funny, but after I thought about it I felt sorry for the girls. I think it was kind of humiliating to them, and I really think a girl should have been chosen." Tom Evans, graduate student in English, Chapel Hill: "It's small potatoes. I grew up in the '60s when they elected pigs, so it's really nothing new. I really don't take it all that seriously." Ridley Kessler, Wilson librarian, Chapel Hill: "I felt sorry for the girls who spent all that money on their dresses. We used to do that sort of thing when I was an undergraduate too, but I guess you look at things dif ferently as you get older." Cynthia Murphy, freshman, criminal justice major, Fayetteville: "I like the idea. Girls are always talking about equal rights, and I think it should work both ways. Tcan understand why it upset some people, but I have no qualms about it. I think it took a lot of courage for him to go through with it." Jeff Creech, sophomore, computer science major, Winston-Salem: "I think it was pretty stupid. It was em barrassing, and I think it upset a lot of the alumni. At first I thought it was a girl just ranning under the "Your momma sleeps in Teague" slogan, but then I realized that it really was a guy." Interviews conducted by staff writer Heidi Owen.
