8The Daily Tar HeelThursday, September 29, 198S Sports A CC Football stats Baseball fever just around the corner By FRANK KENNEDY Assistant Sports Editor Although the final week of the 1983 major league season hasn't provided us with any real suspense, the playoffs, scheduled to begin Tuesday, are shaping up to be some of the most interesting in years. There is really no clear favorite, and both series, Baltimore Chicago and Los Angeles-Philadelphia, should require the max imum five games. The Orioles and the White Sox make for a strange duel. Realistically, Baltimore should take this one. After all, this is as fine a late-season team as they come. In 1982, the Orioles blew away the opposition down the backstretch and, if not for a disap pointing 3-13 start last year, they may have been gunning for World Series No. 2 in a row right now. The Orioles-are loaded everywhere. On the mound, Cy Young candidate Scott McGregor leads a pitching corps that has helped Baltimore get by 30 of its last 39 opponents. Then there are the sluggers like Cal Ripken Jr. and Eddie Murray, who have the O's near the top of the league in total run production. Chicago, on the other hand, is a talented team without a doubt, and its numbers are of the same caliber as the Orioles, but the schedule is the thing. It is so impressive that Chicago won the AL West? We're talking about a division in which the second team is going to finish several games below .500. The Orioles in five games. In the National League, the Phillies would rather play anyone but the Dodgers. In 12 tries this year, the Phillies beat L.A. only twice. However, the Phillies have been the hottest team in baseball, winning 11 of 12 games through Wednesday. Moreover, the Dodgers have been quite unimpressive during the last three weeks, staying around the break-even mark and holding onto their lead only because Atlanta has been doing even worse. Another plus for the Phillies is that they will get games three, four and five (if necessary) in cozy Veterans Stadium. That doesn't always make the difference, but it couldn't hurt. The Phillies have found new life on the mound in the form of John Denny, a leading Cy Young candidate. Denny holds the best record in the National League, and when you put his name next to Steve Carlton, you have the nucleus of a powerful pitching staff. Philadelphia in five games. The World Series? Baltimore in six games. Now that the secret's out, you don't even have to turn on the TV and listen to Howard Co sell as he makes the Orioles and Phils out to be gods. 4 Other baseball picks: Most Valuable Players should be Atlanta's Dale Murphy (again) in a narrow victory over Montreal's Andre Dawson, and Boston's Wade Boggs. Sadly, Boggs will probably not get the honor, since he is playing for a losing team. Cy Young: Chicago White SoxJ Lamar Hoyt and Philadelphia's Denny. It should not have come as such a surprise to all of us patriotic Americans that the Australians took home the America's Cup. During the weeks and weeks of trials, Australia II proved it was superior to all the international competition. Moreover, the Americans won the first two races of the final series thanks in great part to mechanical breakdowns on the Aussies' boat. In races in which both boats were in perfect shape, Australia II was clearly superior. The NCAA college football polls don't mean a heckuva lot right now in light of how spectacular Nebraska has performed through four games. The Cornhuskers were voted a unanimous first place team in this week's AP and UPI polls. So far, the Huskers have outscored the opposition 21649, and that includes wins over folks like Perm State and UCLA. Tom Osborne's squad is averaging 617 yards in total offense, and this may be the greatest single team in NCAA history. North Carolina quarterback Scott Stankavage is leading the na tion in total passing efficiency. Through four games, Stankavage is 53 for 72 passes for a 73.6 percent completion rate and is way ahead of the other ACC QBs in rating points.
