UNC soccer team
has something to
prove in ACC
By KIMBALL CROSSLEY
Staff Writer
The UNC mens soccer team has not
won an ACC game in more than a year.
Last season the team had an 0-4-2 con
ference record. Outside of the ACC, the
team was 1 1-3-2.
Considering that coach Anson Dor
rance's main goal is to be competitive in
the conference, last season was a disaster.
This season the team was off to a great
start: 6-0, with wins over two top 20
teams, and a No. 4 national ranking.
Then they played an ACC game.
Clemson 7, North Carolina 0.
Granted, the ACC is a powerful con
ference. It currently boasts the two top
ranked teams in the country, Duke and
Clemson. But if the Tar Heels want re
spect, and want to achieve Dorrance's
main goal, they must play competitive
soccer within the conference, not out of
it.
Sunday, the Tar Heels will have a
chance to prove themselves. UNC travels
to Virginia to take on the 5-3 Cavaliers,
the No. 15 team in the county, and more
importantly, UNC's second ACC oppo
nent this year.
When asked why his team fared so
poorly in ACC games last year and how a
similar showing could be prevented this
year, Dorrance cited some facts from last
season's games:
"We led N.C. State by a goal with 18
seconds to go, and then noticed that one
of their Nigerians hadn't scored yet."
And against Virginia: "Our keeper had
three saves theirs had 17.
"It was a frustrating year."

UNC ranked sixth in
first field hockey poll
From staff reports
The North Carolina field hockey team
has reached its highest ranking in the his
tory of the school's program, ranking
sixth in the first 1983 NCAA field hockey
poll.
The Tar Heels, under Coach Karen
Shelton and the consistent performance
of Louise Hines, are 4-0-2, with a show
down against the defending national
champions coming up next week.
UNC's previous high ranking was 1 1th
during the middle of last season, and
finished 13th at the end of the 1982 cam
paign. The Tar Heels' most recent victory
was a 3-0 shutout of Springfield (Mass.)
last weekend.
Friday, Shelton's squad will travel to
Virginia to face the 14th-ranked Cavaliers,
who are 3-0. Twentieth-ranked William
and Mary is next for UNC, hosting the
Tar Heels Saturday morning.
UNC returns home for a big game
against defending national champion Old
Dominion Tuesday night. Old Dominion
is ranked second in the nation and has a
record of 3-0.

The frustration stemmed from the fact
that, as Dorrance likes to say, of the 22
games North Carolina played last year,
they dominated 20 of them. Therefore, as
Dorrance said the objective of this year's
team is "to win rather than dominate."
Specifically, since last season the Tar
Heels dominated the midfield and usually
had more shots than their opponent, but
they came up trailing on the scoreboard.
This season, Dorrance is trying to give up

the middle of the field for the sake of put
ting more players in the penalty boxes,
where goals are prevented and scored.
In the Virginia game, especially, the
area directly in front of the goal will be
most important, because Virginia
possesses, as Dorranace said, "two of the
best headers in the ACC, and a throw-in
artist."
One of the two, Brian Vernon, has
already had a game this season in which
he scored three goals and had two assists.
The Tar Heels must be careful that he
doesn't get enough room in front of their
goal for a repeat performance.
With this in mind, Dorrance has been
drilling his team on headers and play in
front of the net. He also said he will make
some adjustments in the regular lineup,
but refused to reveal specifics.
Considering the Cavaliers' strengths, it
looks like the ball will be bouncing
around in front of the UNC net quite a
bit on Sunday. All Dorrance can do is
prepare his team and hope that the ball
doesn't take any funny bounces.

ment of third-year law student Bernard
Alston and senior Frank Sandler as
associate justices to the Student Supreme
Court.
Action on a complaint against the Black
Student Movement Gospel Choir had been
delayed because of vacancies in two of the
five seats on the Student Supreme Court.
CGC members Allan Rosen (District 7)
and Reinhard filed the complaint in April,
charging that the choir violated a ban in
the Student Constitution against the fun
ding of religious groups.
With the appointment of the justices,
the court should take up the case within
three weeks, Chief Justice J.B. Kelly said
Wednesday.
