Ga. Tech still searching for a QB
By KURT ROSENBERG
Assistant Sports Editor
If Dick Crum has problems, Bill Curry
has even bigger problems. At the begin
ning of the week, the North Carolina
coach talked about the difficulty of play
ing Georgia Tech, a team that has lost its
starting quarterback for the entire season.
Curry, the Georgia Tech coach, said he
would not name his quarterback for
Saturday's game against UNC until late
in the week. It's now very late in the
week, and still no word from Curry.
Crum would have preferred not being left
in the dark.
"It's tough to prepare for someone
when you don't know who their quarter
back is going to be," Crum said.
It's even tougher for Curry to prepare
for someone when he doesn't know who
his own quarterback is going to be. Stu
Rogers suffered a knee injury in the first
quarter of Tech's 41-14 loss to Clemson
Saturday, forcing Curry to make a choice
this week from among three players with
virtually no experience.
Sophomore John Dewberry is a good
possibility for the starting spot. He
replaced Rogers and rushed for 101 yards
on 10 carries, including a 66-yard touch
down run.
There's also a chance that freshman
Darrell Gast will start. Gast came in in the
fourth quarter against Clemson and com
pleted seven of 10 passes for 88 yards.
And senior Andy Thomas, in his first
year of varsity football, could see some
action.
No matter who lines up behind center
for the Yellow Jackets, it's not going to
make that much difference. North
Carolina is 4-0; Georgia Tech is 0-3. The
Tar Heels are averaging 36.7 points per
game; the Yellow Jackets, 11.7. UNC's
defense is flowing 13.7 points each
game; Georgia Techs, 26. North
Carolina quarterback Scott Stankavage is
the top-rated passer in college football.
Georgia Tech doesn't even know who its
quarterback is.
But there's no doubt about who the
Yellow Jackets' tailback is. Robert
Lavette, who rushed for 1,208 yards last
season, is the ACC's fourth leading
rusher, with 74 yards per game. Lavette
has also caught 1 1 passes.
Lavette's seen the films of UNC's win
over William and Mary last week, in
which the Tar Heels allowed the Indians
352 yards on offense.
"Hopefully, they won't look too good
this week, either," Lavette said.
For the Tar Heels, the game is their
first ACC matchup of the season. After
hearing endless criticism about its weak
non-conference schedule, UNC is glad to
start playing its conference games.
"I think our kids feel a sense of relief,
because the past four games, we've been
in a can't-win situation (win or lose, they
would still be criticized)." .
Georgia Tech may be in a can't-win
situation this week. But Crum, in his
typical style, doesn't underestimate the
Yellow Jackets.
"Every time we play them they have a
special preparation week for us and get
really cranked up," he said.
Curry phrases things a little bit dif
ferently. "This is a week of simplifying and fun
damental work for us, simply because
that's what we obviously need.'.'
That, and a quarterback.

Unbeaten Cavs to tackle Maryland
The Associated Press
Undefeated Virginia tries to maintain
its ACC lead this weekend as it visits No.
19 Maryland on Saturday.
The Cavaliers Have never held the top
spot in the. conference this far into the
season and are off to their best start since
1952. The Terrapins reappeared in the
Associated Press college football poll
after defeating Pittsburgh last weekend.
Maryland has retained the wide-tackle
six as its primary defensive weapon, and
that has Cavalier coach George Welsh a
bit worried.
"You only see that type defense once a
year. So it requires our players to learn a
lot," Welsh said, adding that although
it's difficult to study, the defense is not
invincible.
N.C.'State, which lost to the Cavaliers!
last weekend, looks again for its first con-;
ference victory when it plays Wake Forest.:
The Demon Deacons are playing their first;
ACC game, and are working on a streakl
of 12 consecutive quarters without allow-;
ing a touchdown.
Duke hosts No. 15 Miami of Florida in
a regionally televised game. The Blue
Devils are winless in three outings and
had last weekend off.
Wake Forest is another team opening
its conference schedule, but coach Al
Groh is working on keeping the pressure
off his troops.
"I think a conference game magnifies
the pride factor," Groh said. "You live
with these people. It's no different than
when you compete with your brothers
and sisters in a family."
N.C. State coach Tom Reed was quite
disappointed with his team's 26-14 loss to
Virginia. He's hoping there's more than
enough motivation to take to. Winston
Salem and beyond.
"The game and the motivational fac
tors hopefully will play a part in it. We're
1:2. We have a lotto pjove." '
Apparently, there have been rumblings
in Durham concerning Duke's slow start
under new head coach Steve Sloan, who
admits to feeling the heat of the public's
scrutiny.
"Going 0-3 is obviously harder than
3-0, 2-1 or 1-2 dealing with losing is
much more difficult," Sloan said. "The
fans, media, everything requires an ex
planation. And more is required when
you're losing."
Meeting a team that just whipped
Notre Dame doesn't make life any easier
for Sloan.
