Defending NCAA field hockey cham
pion Old Dominion defeated the sixth
ranked and previously unbeaten North
Carolina Tar Heels Tuesday night by a
score of 3-0 on Navy Field.
The Lady Monarchs scored two firsi
half goals and added a third in the second
period to extend their winning streak, al
ready the nation's longest, to 18 straight
games.
Ingrid Wolf opened up the scoring for
Old Dominion with a goal just under five
minutes into the contest, and Christy
Morgan pushed that lead to two with the
first of a pair of goals 30 minutes later.
Morgan finished up the scoring with a
goal 6:16 into the second half.
The Lady Monarch's Lynn Currie re
corded three saves in the shutout, while
North Carolina goalkeeper Jan Miles had
14.
Old Dominion went to 5-0 on the
season, while the Tar Heels fell to 5-1-3.
North Carolina's volleyball team
bounced back from its 1-3 performance
in the University of Texas Tournament
this weekend to handily defeat the visiting
Clemson Tigers 15-8, 15-3, 16-18, 15-3
Tuesday night in Carmichael Audi
torium. Head coach Beth Miller attributed part
of the Tar Heels' play to the nationally
ranked competition they ran into out
West.
"We're a better team now than we
were before we played in the (Texas) tour
nament,' y Miller said after the Clemson
win. "We pulled things together tonight.
The good competition really helped us."
The Tar Heels were led to their fifth
victory, against four losses, by captains
Donna Meier and Linda Kantz. Kantz
gathered 23 assists while playing in just
three games. Meier, coming off her All
Tournament selection over the weekend,
led North Carolina's powerful net game
with 12 kills.
This weekend the Tar Heels will play in
the Florida State Tournament and return
to Chapel Hill Tuesday to host Virginia.
The North Carolina women's golf
team finished eighth in the Memphis
Women's Intercollegiate at Memphis
State University after carding a 316 in
Tuesday's final round. The Tar Heels had
a three-day total of 939, 39 strokes
behind South Florida's tournament
record 900 total.
South Florida's Diane Nowakowski
took medalist honors with a 220 total.
UNC's Linda Mescan fired a final round
76 to finish nine shots back at 229.
Mescan was the highest North Carolina
finisher, ending the tournament in a tie
for seventh plaqe.
The Tar Heels' Cathy Johnston shot a
final-round 83 to finish with a 235 total,
while Page Marsh shot an 80 for a 236.
Kathy Ayers came in at 77 for a 238 total, .
and Kandi Kessler had a 90 for a 255.
The Tar Heels begin play in the Duke
Fall Invitational Friday in Durham.
