Terps roll by
Clemson whips State
The Associated Press
Clemson has suffered from the pass
this season, but the Tigers lived by it this
weekend and knocked off upset-minded
N.C. State.
Mike Eppley threw two touchdown
passes, ran for a third and added a two
point conversion as the Tigers cranked up
their offense in the fourth quarter for a
27-17 victory. Going into the game,
Clemson was last in pass defense in the
ACC.
Wake Forest ended two of its own
ACC droughts by taking a 38-34 victory
over Virginia on Gary Schofield's fourth
quarter touchdown pass to Tim Ryan.
No. 15 Maryland crushed Duke 38-3 as
Rich Badanjek scored two touchdowns
and Boomer Esiason passed for 198 yards
and another score. The Blue Devils are
winless in seven games.
In non-conference action, Tennessee
whipped Georgia Tech 37-3, sending the
Ramblin' Wreck to its sixth loss in
seven games.
N.C. State held a 17-9 edge midway
through the third quarter, but the Tigers
got their running game going and closed
the gap on Eppley's 28-yard run. Then,
Eppley completed a 75-yard scoring play
to Raymond Williams, a pass that skip
ped off the hands of Wolfpack defender
Dwayne Greene, to help raise Clemson's
record to 5-1-1.
"We made history today by proving we
can play football in the third and fourth
quarters," Clemson coach Danny Ford
said.
Wolfpack coach Tom Reed called it
another heartbreaking loss as his team
dropped to 2-5.
"We made mistakes," Reed said. "But
the underlying tone was that we came to
play reached for a plateau that we had
Dl ITT
I THEATRES
been striving for."
The Demon Deacons had not beaten
an ACC opponent in 12 games, dating
back to a 24-21 victory over Virginia in
1981. Also, Wake Forest had not won an
ACC game at home since a triumph over
Duke in 1979. Thus, the 17,500 people
who braved the wind and rain witnessed
history when Schofield hit Ryan with
14:19 left.
The issue was left in doubt, however,
until Derek Jenkins fumbled a handoff
from quarterback Wavne Schuchts at the
21 and Randall Sjingleton pounced on it
to raise Wake Forest to 4-4 and 1-3.
Virginia dropped to 5-3 and 2-2.
"We put a lot more pressure on the de
fense than we needed to," Schofield said.
"But the defense kept playing tough and
came up with the big play."
Maryland showed no signs of looking
ahead to its battle with No. 3 North
Carolina as it allowed Duke only one
penetration into Terrapin territory in the
first half. The most disheartening news
came when Maryland fullback Dave
D'Addio suffered a separated shoulder
and was declared out for the rest of the
season.
"They (the losses) all feel about the
same," said Duke quarterback Ben Ben
nett, who failed to throw a touchdown
pass for the first time in 18 games. "It's
like a dull grind now. You get sick and
tired of losing."
Alan Cockrell threw two touchdown
passes and Fuad Reveiz kicked three field
goals in a rainstorm as the Volunteers
climbed to 5-2.
Next weekend, Wake Forest is at Clem
son, while Georgia Tech heads north to
meet Duke. The Wolfpack continues its
tour of South Carolina as it faces the
Gamecocks and Virginia has the weekend
off.

UNC b-ball sweeps four
in Greece; Lady Tar Heel
tourney concludes today
DTHFile Photo
Senior Sam Perkins scored 17 points to lead North Carolina past the
Greek National team Friday in Athens, Greece.
From Staff and Wire Reports
North Carolina's basketball team,
ranked No. 1 in Street and Smith's
preseason poll, took its act overseas dur
ing Fall Break and capped off a four
game, week-long excursion with a cruise
around the Greek islands Saturday.
Along the way, the Tar Heels defeated
national teams from Italy, Yugoslavia and
host Greece to get the 1983-84 campaign
off in style.
Play opened in the exhibition series
Wednesday with UNC defeating the
Berloni, Italy, team, 87-71, in the city of
Salonica. The Berloni squad was compos
ed of two Americans and a member of
the Italian National team, which won the
last European title.
Thursday, the Tar Heels played a rare
doubleheader, stopping the Greek Na
tional team, 100-83, then squeaking by
the Yugoslavs, 105-104.
"We won three games in 50 hours,"
coach Dean Smith said. "I guess it is a
new record."
The sweep was capped off Friday with
another win over the Greeks, 79-71. In
that game, forward Sam Perkins led
UNC with 17 points, while guard Michael
Jordan added 16 and center Brad
Daugherty had 10.
Smith said he was impressed with the
performance of the host team. "They
(Greece) made great progress since I-last
saw them play in 1976; I am sure that the
Greeks will make it to the Olympics,'
Smith said.
. The UNC women's golf team was sit
ting comfortably in third place Saturday
after two rounds of the Lady Tar Heel In
vitational in Chapel Hill this weekend,
but its chances of moving up on the
leaders was delayed Sunday when rairt
forced the postponement of the final
round of action. The 54-hole tournament
will conclude today.
The Tar Heels had carded a team-total
628 after 36 holes, 16 strokes behind
leader Kentucky, despite turning in the
low score of the second round at 309.
In second place at 618 is South Florida.
The Tar Heels' Page Marsh is in sixth
place individually at 152.
Nineteen teams are competing in the
tournament, which is being held at Finley
Golf Course.
UNC field hockey troops rolled right
along Thursday, knocking off Southern
Illinois 3-6 and solidifying its national
ranking.
Sophomore forward Sandy Smith led
the way for the lOth-ranked Tar Heels
with two goals. "
Forward Claire Dougherty added the
third UNC goal as the Tar Heels raised
their season mark to 9-1-3. UNC will host
Wake Forest Tuesday at 7 p.m.
