her son was agonizing.
"It's not knowing that makes it so bad," said the
mother of 19-year-old Marine Johnny Copeland of
Burlington, who was scheduled to leave Lebanon
Nov. 15.
"The Marines will send someone to tell you,"
Copcland's father said. "If we see someone walking
up dressed in blues, we'll know. I guess there won't
even need to be anything said .... Drinking coffee
and smoking cigarettes, that's all we've been doing."

Marine chaplain Crruir. Richard Boyer told a Camp
Lejeune news conference that reaction among families
already notified was varied.
"The family reaction varied so much, there's no
specific answer," Boyer said. "It goes all the way
from being very matter-of-fact to taking the notifica
tion ... very, very hard."
Boyer said the chaplains were burying their own
feelings in order to help the families.
"No chaplain feels good about a call like this, but
they'll bury their feelings for a while," he said.
The teams began notifying families "sometime dur
ing the night," Boyer said.

The Soviet Union, in its strongest

Western military analysts believe the

was the first public acknowledgement
by the Kremlin that it was even plan
