The president's supporters hailed his move as necessary to protect American citizens and to force the removal of a Marxist government, backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba, on a strategically situated Caribbean island. His critics complained that he acted illegally without consulting Congress and that he was substituting military action for diplomacy. "One day we've got the number of Marine deaths which shockdd us all, and the next day we find we are in vading Grenada," said Sen. Lawton Chiles, D-Fla. "Are we looking for a war we can win?" House and Senate members who supported Reagan's decision urged him to limit the role of U.S. troops to protecting the 1,000 American civilians on the Caribbean island and then to bring American forces speedily home. r 929-SUBS 7827 Free Delivery 5 pm to Midnight sub siiitioih HO J .1 - I f "Sandwich Shop with ourchase I (ham, pepperoni, i sub and offer good Try our subs for GIANT PARTY L Classified ad may be placed at the DTH office or mailed to the DTH Carolina Union 065A, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. A judge Tues day dismissed federal charges against the man accused of storming Augusta National Golf Club on Saturday, tak ing five hostages and demanding to speak to vacationing President Reagan. U.S. District Judge Dudley Bowen Jr. granted the government's request to dismiss the charges but gave federal prosecutors the option of reinstating the charges against Charles R. Harris, 45, of Augusta at a later date. U.S. Attorney Hinton R. Pierce asked that the federal charges be drop ped so the state of Georgia first could pursue its kidnapping charges against Harris, who is accused of crashing a pickup truck through a gate at the golf club and taking five hostages at gunpoint. WASHINGTON President Reagan fired half the Civil Rights Commission to make room for his own team of conservatives Tuesday in a move that effectively puts the gadfly agency out of business at least tem porarily. Outraged civil rights groups said the three ousted members, appointed by two previous presidents, were guilty only of criticizing the administration's record. Reagan's surprise move came after five months of wrangling between the administration and congressional liberals over the makeup of the in dependent commission. 400 West Franklin St. Across from Bus Station Small 13 of a larae 13 salami and cheese) a large drink thru Nov. 12 your tailgate parties SUBS AVAILABLE ..(.?
