Deacons try to put the past behind By GLENNA BURRESS Staff Writer Predictions about the potential of a basketball team for an upcoming season are usually based on a comparison be tween the results of the past season and the capabilities of the present squad. However, in making projections about the 1983 Wake Forest team, coach Carl Tacy is eager to alter that method of analysis by dwelling on the present, and leaving the events of the last season behind. Probably the most trying year in Tacy's 1 1 at Wake For est, the 1982-83 season was hampered by a flourish of off-the-court unrest that centered around communication problems with Tacy. Kenny Green's suspension, Sylvester Charles' departure from the team, a host of injuries and two regular season-ending losses by a total of 74 points pro mpted the team to call a meeting with athletic director Gene Hooks. But a team gathering before the ACC tournament open ed the communication lines with Tacy, and the Deacons WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS No. NAME HTWT CLASS HOMETOWN 14 Tyrone Bogues 5-3135 Fr. Such optimism continued through the off-season, and is leading Wake Forest into the 1983 campaign. The uplifted morale combined with an abundance of talent makes for a team that could challenge UNC and Maryland for the ACC crown. Tacy is hesitant to- confirm such projections, however, which have been based on the return of all but one player from last year's squad. "We had to scratch, dig and work very hard for what we were able to achieve a year ago," Tacy said. "Sometimes there's a relaxed feeling that with a better squad, a little more talent coming in, we might be able to let up. We'll have to guard against those feelings." Of the returning players, three of the four veteran start ers are seniors. One of the elder Deacs is 6-9 center Anthony Teachey, who finished third in the ACC last season in re bounding, an area which is a weakness in this year's squad. At guard, the Deacons will depend on 6-3 senior Danny Young, who was hampered by recurring injuries last sea son, but who Tacy believes will be the cornerstone of Wake's first five. "A lot of the success we have as a team depends on the type of year that Danny has," he said. Teaming with Young at guard, 6-2 junior Delaney Rudd was recently called "the most improved player in the coun try" by ESPN's Dick Vitale. Senior John Toms, a 6-6 forward, led the Deacons in scoring a year ago. Toms will be complemented in the front court by the sole newcomer to the starting five, sophomore Kenny Green, an exceptional leaper who has been impres sive as an inside scorer. The returning veterans will be strongly supported by five outstanding Wake Forest recruits. Leading the rookies is 6-7 swingman Mark Cline, a Williamson, Ky. native who was twice selected for both All-American and West Virginia player-of-the-year honors. y-to'Z'1 ''-MP' "; fa'--' A V TTHCriarles W. Todd May, the sophomore transfer from Kentucky with a reputation as big as the state, should also make a signifi cant contribution. The other newcomer who will earn playing time initially is 5-3 point guard Tyrone Bogues. The MVP of the nation's top ranked high school team last season, Bogues averaged eight points, eight steals and eight assists per game in high school.
