Mullen (6.9 points per game last year), Dan Merrifield and highly regarded freshman Tom Sheehey will also vie for forward spots, Sheehey, at 6-8 the second-tallest player on the team, should see a lot of action and may start because of his rebounding prowess. The recruit from Rochester, N.Y. has been com pared to Larry Bird and Mitch Kupchak. Hol land himself called Sheehey a "big Jeff Lamp." Miller and Sheehey will be the bulk of Vir ginia's inside offense, and Miller is aware of that. "I definitely feel like I have to score and re bound more this season," he said. "I have to create more opportunities for myself." Sheehey, on the other hand, does not seem intimated ty what awaits him in his first col lege season. "I guess there's a little pressure to get rebounds, but not much," he said. "I'm satisfied with what I can do." Overall, the Cavaliers have lost a lot from last season, including one of the most domi nating forces in the college game since Bill Walton and Lew Alcindor. But to count Vir ginia out of the ACC picture because Ralph Sampson is now playing in Houston would be a big mistake. The Cavaliers proved last year that they could win without Ralph. Virginia defeated NCAA runner-up Houston last year by nine points with Sampson out of the lineup. They also beat Boston College, Missouri, - James Madison, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech with Sampson on the bench for long stretches. Hol land is a team-oriented coach, and the Cava liers have proven they can function without Sampson. Expect another solid Virginia team this season not of the caliber of last year's squad, but capable of 18 to 22,victories and a few upsets along the way. "It's fun being the underdog," Carlisle said. "You have nothing to lose. I'm going to enjoy going after teams we're not expected to beat." PerkmS from page IS "He's talkative, but he's sort of to himself," says Exum. "He's a loner." There's no better proof than the fact that he lives alone in his own apartment ("It was just best for me."). There he can have his privacy and listen to his music, which is one of his big gest hobbies. "I like music with a nice mellow beat," he says. A nice mellow beat. It couldn't be more fitting. 75. lf& 4vij. HKte 'yis $!Vi- 30 The Daily Tar Heel Basketball 83-84
