Stone that they will halt their guerrilla war if the leftist Sandinista government moves toward democratic reforms. A senior U.S. official, who spoke only on condition that he not be identified, said shortly after Stone concluded a series of meetings Wednesday night and Thursday morning in Panama City, Panama, that the anti-Sandinista groups are prepared to open negotiations with the Sandinista govern ment. The official said, "The main thing is they've all gotten together and they agreed that if they can get some significant steps on the part of the Nicaraguan government, they will stop the fighting." Because all this is new and current, he said, it is uncertain how the message will be delivered to Sandinista authorities in Managua. The Nicaraguan government has promised to hold elec tions in 1985, and sent a delegation to the United States three weeks ago to study American election laws. HOLIDAY CASH! After deliberating for almost seven hours, the jury found Lavelle guilty of ly ing last February about the date she first learned her former employee, Aero-Jet General Corp., was involved in a Califor nia waste dump. The jury convicted her on two counts of lying before Senate and House com mittees about this fact and on one count of lying about the date in a sworn state ment submitted to Congress. Main Carrboro MOSCOW The Soviet Union announced Thursday that its Parliament will meet Dec. 28 and Western diplomats speculated that President Yuri V. Andropov will preside. Andropov has not been seen in public for 104 days. As head of the Presidium of the Parliament, Andropov's presence is considered mandatory. His reappearance could provide the first solid evidence on the state of the 69-year-old leader's health as well as give an indication of how firmly he holds power. During his absence there have been rumors that Andropov was seriously ill and questions have been raised about who is running the country. AUCKLAND, New Zealand Argentine troops captured during the Falklands war feared that British soldiers would eat them, and some woke up surrounded by British paratroopers holding knives and forks, a Royal Navy docotor says. Lt. Cmdr. Simon Glover was quoted as saying he learned while serving as a surgeon on a hospital ship during the 1982 war in the South Atlantic that Argentine comrnsnders riad told their men they would be eaten if taken prisoner. British soldiers played on the fears of wounded Argen tines, who were put in beds next to British wounded on the converted cruise ship Uganda, Glover was quoted as saying in an interview published Thursday in the New Zealand Herald newspaper. "More than one Argentine awoke to find his bed sur rounded by paratroopers, each with a knife and fork," Glover was quoted a savino last August, however, the 10 women and two men on the jury found her guilty. The jury returned to the courtroom briefly early in the day after requesting that U.S. District Judge Norma Johnson explain legal points again concerning one of the five counts against Lavelle. After an eight-day trial, the jury began its deliberations on Wednesday. Lavelle, 36, faced a total of five felony charges or perjury and obstructing a con gressional investigation. In addition to being briefed on the law, the jury asked to see a key document the government presented in its case against Lavelle. The document, which formed the basis of two of the charges, was a Dec. 13 letter she wrote explaining when she learned Aero-Jet General Corp. had dumped wastes at the Stringfellow Acid Pits in California. In the sworn statement and in later testimony before Congress, Ms. Lavelle maintained that she first learned about the corporation's Stringfellow connection on June 17, 1982. The government contended that Ms. Lavelle was told about Aero-Jet on May 28. show, "Star of Bethlehem." The correct phone number is 962-1248.
