UNC students can expect to see some
changes in University dining services
during the upcoming exam period and
during the spring semester.
At a meeting of the Food Services
Advisory Committee Friday, ARA
Director of Dining Services Tony
Hardee said the Pine Room would close
for the semester at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec.
9, because of ongoing renovations in
Lenoir Hall.
From then until the end of the
semester the Fast Break will offer a
cafeteria-style serving line featuring
meats and vegetables seven days a week.
The Pine Room will reopen at the be
ginning of the spring semester.
According to Hardee, additional
tables will be put in the Fast Break and
possibly in the Union to limit problems
with overcrowding. "I urge students to
come earlier or later than they normally
eat to miss the peak periods," Hardee
said.
Hardee said the exam period was tra
ditionally a time of reduced traffic in
university dining establishments, and he

But J. Lee Greene, an associate professor of
English and an expert on Afro-American
social history, said the court's ruling was con
sistent with the black church's view of gospel
music. Greene was a key witness for the
defense in the Nov. 16 hearing.
"Gospel music is seldom part of the
religious ritual in a black church," Greene said
in an interview Sunday. "They would allow it
in about once a month, usually as an adjunct
to the service.
"A gospel choir is never the main choir in a
black church, except in "the Pentecostal
Church," he said.
The court ruled that a program, service or
event is of a religious nature when its "primary
character... looked at in the entire context, in
cluding all surrounding circumstances ... pro
motes or advocates a non-secular belief, or
persuades or solicits the reasonable individual
to a non-secular belief."
But a performance can ' be declared un
constitutional if it contains prayer or scripture
or readings is held as part of a religious service,
according to the ruling.
If a program, service or event is declared un
constitutional under the new "religious nature
test," the Supreme Court is required to issue
an injunction preventing the group from spen
ding student fees. A group may have the in
junction lifted by making "a good faith show
ing" that it will no longer violate the religious
nature test. The Supreme Court injunction
cannot last beyond the end of the fiscal year in
which it is issued.
"However, we are convinced a good faith
showing was made by the president of the
Gosjjel, Choir-and,that prayers, will no longer,
be iecited prior to future performances," the

But Rosen said he wasn't aware of any good
faith showing made by the choir. Under the

said he knew more students would
avoid eating in the Fast Break during
this exam period because of the crowds.
"I realize the Fast Break could be
crowded during this time, so I have ex
tended the time through which current
meal plans can be used until Feb. 3 next
semester," Hardee said.
A serving line will be set up along one
wall of the Fast Break to provide hot
meals. "It will be a full cafeteria line
with less variety than the Pine Room,"
Hardee said. "I realize that a choice be
tween only hot dogs and hamburgers is
not acceptable."
The Fast Break will continue to serve
its full menu of fast food, and the South
Campus snack bars in Morrison and
Hinton James will operate during their
regular hours.
Food Services Committee Chairman
Ron Hyatt said the early closing of the
Pine Room was unavoidable.
"I want students to know that the
reason we are closing is to improve food
services over time," Hyatt said. "We
will try our best to render good food
services to students during exams."

Kelly described the justices' deliberations as
lively, but he said it quickly became apparent
that the decision would be favorable to the
Gospel Choir.
"We had an idea where the court stood," he
said. "The opinion expresses that, which is
reflected in the unanimous vote."
Frank Sandler, an associate justice, said he
was skeptical of the choir's case going into the
hearing but reversed his decision because of
the evidence and testimony presented.
"No matter how we argued it, they deserved
funding," Sandler said of the court's deliberations.

Tar Heel this week, Hardee said.
More changes are planned for the
. spring semester. According to Hardee,
the Pine Room will close its doors for
the semester March 30, 1984, in order to
complete, the renovations in Lenoir.
Hardee said the kitchen in Lenoir would
remain in operation during the renova
tions. Through April 27, cafeteria-style
meals will be served Monday through
Friday in the Great Hall. The Fast
Break will serve fast food seven days a
week and cafeteria meals on weekends
through April 27.
From April 27 to May 9, fast food
and cafeteria meals will be offered at
the Fast Break seven days a week be
cause the Great Hall will be unavailable
then.
As compensation to students for the
changes during the spring, Hardee said
a cheaper, $200 meal plan would be
available. "We're not trying to force
students to eat meals with us," he said.
"We simply have to make sacrifices
now to be ready in August," Hardee
said.

Officials say they're unaware of it
Decision expected on new film proposal

A decision is expected today from University officials on a
revised proposal from Warner Bros, to film segments of
Everybody's All-American on campus next spring but
University officials contacted Sunday said they knew of no such
proposal.
"I have not seen any such proposal," said UNC President
William C. Friday.
Public Information Director Thaddeus M. Bonus also said he
was unaware of any new proposal. "Whatever changes they
propose would have to be substantial," he said.
But Paula J. Wyrick, assistant director of the N.C. Film Of
fice, insisted that a revised proposal had been made and a deci
sion on it would be made public today.
"A representative from Warner Bros, talked with Rollie
Tillman (vice chancellor of university relations) Wednesday,"
Wyrick said. "He explained in detail to Mr. Tillman exactly
what (parts of campus) would be needed.
"I don't know if Mr. Tillman is not talking about it," she
said.
Tillman could not be reached for comment Sunday.
Wyrick said the film would deposit $7 million to $8 million in

because the University won't allow filming on the campus," she
said. Besides Kenan Stadium, filming would be done in the area
between Phillips Hall and the Old Well, she said.
"Warner Bros, has changed a lot of what they felt like they
shouldn't change. They're willing to change the shooting
schedule, days needed, and even the name of the University,"
Wyrick said. The studio is willing to film any time between
March and May, including spring break, as well as nights and
Saturdays, she said.
Everybody's All-American would be Warner Bros.' first film
made in North Carolina, Wyrick said. "They had about 60 loca
tions in the story and we found all of them in about a 40-mile
radius except the Nag's Head segment," she said.
"We (the film office) are state-supported, and the school is
state supported. We're working on a happy medium for both
groups involved," Wyrick said.
"It will really just be a shame if the school doesn't reconsider
and say yes," she said.
Everybody's All-American, based on the Frank Deford novel
of the same name, is the story of a fictitious UNC football great
and his post-collegiate life. The film will be directed by Michael
Apted who directed Coal Miner's Daughter and the forthcom
ing Gorky Park, and will star Tommy Lee Jones and Jessica
Lange.
