Lebanon
Syrian television said President Hafez Assad had
sent letters to all Arab leaders and a number of
foreign heads of state "pledging he is determined to
confront any aggression .... The American interven
tion in Lebanon has turned into the stage of direct
military aggression against Syrian, Lebanon and the
Arab nation," requiring "serious confrontation."
Italy's premier hinted the U.S. air raid caused Italy
to consider Dulling its forces out of the multinational
force designed to enforce a cease-fire among the war
ring Lebanese factions.
And the U.S. Marine commander in Beirut said
eight Americans who died in shelling Sunday night
probably were killed by a single 120mm mortar round.

In Washington, the Defense Department said 28
carrier-based Navy bombers inflicted "significant

on Sunday.
The raid was the first U.S. air strike in Lebanon
and the first direct attack against Soviet-backed Syria
which, like Israel, occupies large portions of
Lebanese territory.
Tlass said in a telephone interview in Damascus that
the captured American pilot, Lt. Roy O. Goodman,

United States, Tlass replied, "Like in all wars, when
the war is over; that is, when the United States will
leave Lebanon."
Tlass also confirmed that Lt. Mark A. Lange of
Fraser, Mich., died after he was captured. Lange and
Goodman were aboard a two-seat A-6 from the car
rier John F. Kennedy. The pilot of the other plane
shot down during the raid was rescued with only
minor injuries, the Pentagon said.
Larry Speakes, the chief White House spokesman J
in Washington, said the Reagan administration has
written to the U.N. Security Council asking Syria to
release Goodman and defending the bombing mission
as "a discrete measure taken in self-defense."

WASHINGTON The Supreme
Court said Monday it will consider
permanently reinstating a requirement
that young men prove they registered
for the draft when applying for federal
college loans and grants.
Acting on a Reagan administration
appeal, the court agreed to review a
ruling by a federal judge in Minnesota
who said the law requiring disclosure
of draft registration status is unconsti
tutional. The justices last June rein
stated the rule temporarily, and it is
now in effect.
The law was challenged by six Min
nesota college students who said a loss
of financial aid was unfair punishment
for not registering with the Selective
Service.
