2The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, December 7, 1983 Bush State A senior U.S. defense official said Weinberger also warn ed the allies that a shortage of artillery ammunition in -Western Europe is reaching dangerous levels. A double plague of tornadoes and floods ripped the Deep South on Tuesday, killing one person, tearing houses from their foundations, flinging sleeping people into the streets and reducing barns to matchsticks. The twisters leveled whole sections of Selma, Ala., where a housing project and college dormitory were smashed, and LaPlace, La., where 100 people were left homeless. The fury was unleashed before dawn when nearly everyone was indoors. The number of deaths stood at one and injuries at 15 in Selma. In LaPlace, 126 houses were damaged or destroyed and 25 people were injured. From page 1 "Overseas, President Reagan's program a program based on building a true, lasting peace through strength has restored confidence and respect for America's leadership of the free world." Bush credited the success of the American fighting forces with increased confidence and respect of the American people. Before Bush's comments, Helms spoke briefly of his relationship with Bush as president of the Senate, praising Bush for his effective leadership in the administra tion. In 1980, Helms played a role in trying to nrevpnf thfn-nrp:JHfntil candidate Bush from winning the N.C. nomination and helped Reagan carry North Carolina in the primar' East also spoke on behalf of Helms, saying Helms' legislative tactics brought forth "the most skillful tobacco legislation to date." Helms was a major cor'nbutor to the recently passed Senate tobacco bill, which froze the federal government's price-support system at current levels. Taking a stab at North Carolina's large city media, East said that an unfair bias existed against Helms. "He (Helms) is highly regarded as a legislator in spite of what you read from the high priests of the editorial pages," he said. "I do not know a man who takes more abuse than does Jesse Helms." Helms is expected to face a tough re election battle against Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt, though neither candidate has officially announced. Earlier this year, the administration helped Helms raise money by staging a fund-raising dinner in Washington in the spring. Nation The Associated Press BRUSSELS, Belgium U.S. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger on Tuesday asked the European allies to .strengthen their defenses and denied that his drive for more sophisticated NATO weapons is a sales pitch for U.S.-made arms. Weinberger made the call at the opening of a two-day, 14-nation NATO defense ministers conference a session that is stressing conventional defenses after years of NATO preoccupation with nuclear missiles.
