Helms announces plans

RALEIGH Sen. Jesse Helms,
R-N.C, said Wednesday he will seek a
third term against the expected opposi
tion of Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt in a
campaign that attracted national atten
tion long before it became official.
"All I hope is that the people of North
Carolina understand the issues and
understand where both candidates or
however many candidates there are
where they stand," Helms said after filing
papers at the State Board of Elections.
"If my positions on all the issues are
understood by the people and they don't
want me for the U.S. Senate, that would
