. RALEIGH Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C, should concentrate
more on campaign issues and less on attacking potential op
ponents for his Senate seat, Gov. Jim Hunt said Thursday.
Hunt, expected to declare his candidacy for Helms' seat in
February, said at his weekly press conference that he was
"disappointed" at comments male by the conservative incum
bent after he filed for his third term on Wednesday.
"It came across to me as an attack on me," Hunt said. "I
hope that's not typical of the kind of campaign he will run."
Helms accused Hunt, a Democrat, of hiding behind a battery
of press aides and refusing to take stands on key issues.
But Hunt responded Thursday that it was Helms who was
avoiding the issues.
