Wolfe offers exposure to a number of
stylistic and linguistic devices, Wilson said.
; The seminar format of the course, which meets
one evening a week in the fall, allows for a free
exchange of ideas. Wilson said he saw his role
as leading and guiding the discussion.
"I think Wolfe is particularly hard to teach
because in a way he appeals to emotions more
than intellect," he said. "Wolfe has a different
appeal for different people. With Wolfe you
don't have a nice neat analysis. It's hard to
switch gears sometimes. Teaching science in
volves imparting factual information; with
literature it's a little more subjective. In that
sense it's hard to switch from one type of
teaching to another.

He describes himself as a "fairly serious"

"Wolfe was obsessed with time. I guess I
have some very deep kinship with Wolfe. Time
is so critical in my life, my sense of the impor
tance of time is hypertrophied," Wilson said.
Wilson is most interested in education. "As
an orthopedist, my major interest has been in
the field of education at all levels: graduate,
postgraduate, and with the Wolfe class,
undergraduate. I would like to sec the breadth
of the undergraduate experience increased for
those who are headed toward scientific careers,
not to memorize dates and couplets, but to get
a sense of history and a sense of poetry. The
creation of a broad undergraduate base is an
important underpinning of a scientific
career."
One of Wilson's favorite quotes from
Thomas Wolfe is found in Look Homeward,
Angel: "There is one voyage, the first, the last,
the only one."
Frank Wilson is certainly making the most
of his. '
