From staff reports
North Carolina tries to keep its perfect
record and No. 1 ranking intact as it plays
two home games this weekend. The Tar
Heels face Georgia Tech on Saturday at 1
p.m. (Raycom) and Louisiana State on
Sunday at 1 p.m. (NBC).
If Wednesday's 100-63 win over Wake
Forest is an indication, the chore should
not be all that difficult. But Georgia Tech
has a somewhat surprising 14-2 record, is
second in the ACC at 4-1 and is ranked
19th in the nation in the USA
TODAYCNN poll. And LSU (12-3) is
No. 10 in the AP poll and No. 14 in the
UPI top 20.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a
win over Clemson on Thursday night and
an emotionally exhausting, 2-71, triple
overtime victory over Virginia on Mon
day. The team is off to its best start in 21
years. Still, coach Bobby Cremins is con
cerned. "Playing North Carolina in Chapel
Hill will be a huge obstacle for our kids,"
Cremins said. "They (the Tar Heels)
might be Dean Smith's best team ever.
Obviously, we will have to play a great
game, or we will be in trouble."
Sophomore guard Mark Price leads the
Yellow Jackets, averaging about 16
ointc rr otme H ' joined in the
backcourt by freshman standout Bruce
Dalrymple, who was scoring 14.5 points
and pulling down 7.6 rebounds a game
before the Clemson contest. The for
wards are 6-11 sophomore John Salley
and 6-6 junior Scott Petway, and 6-11
junior Yvon Joseph is at center.
Last season, UNC rallied from a 21-9
halftime deficit to defeat LSU, 47-43.
Tigers coach Dale Brown wouldn't mind
seeing the same thing happen in the first
half, but hopes his team can avoid a
similar second-half showing.
"We let North Carolina off the hook
last year," Brown said. "Our defense has
to be as brilliant as it was then for us to
have a chance to beat them."
Guard Derrick Taylor, a 6-0
sophomore, is LSU's leading scorer,
averaging 16 points per game. Senior
Leonard Mitchell, a 6-7 forward, is scor
ing 13.5 points and grabbing 8.9 re
bounds a game. The other forward is 6-8
sophomore Jerry Reynolds (13.3 points
and 7.8 rebounds per game).
LSU will be the underdog, coming into
Carmichael Auditorium trying to upset
the top-ranked team in the nation, and
that should help the Tigers.
"We aren't supposed to beat North
Carolina," Tudor said. "So we'll be pret
ty relaxed for the game."
Krzyzewski's contract
extended 5 years at Duke
DURHAM Duke basketball
coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose Blue
Devils have a 52-51 record since he
took over Vi years ago, has received
a new five-year contract that will run
through the 1988-89 season.
The announcement of the contract
last week came with one year to run on
Krzyzewski's original pact. Neither he
nor Athletic Director Tom Butters,
would discuss the financial terms.
"He deserved it, he's earned it and
the university is extraordinarily pleas
ed with him as a man and as a coach,"
Butters said. "For years I've been ask
ed my yardstick on a coach, and Mike
measures up to it."
Krzyzewski's team was 14-4 this
season with a game against N.C. State
set for Thursday night. Six of Duke's
eight top players are either freshmen
or sophomores.
"We offered the first five years on
what I thought he could do," Butters
said. "Now, this five is on what I
know he can do and what he's in the
process of accomplishing."
Krzyzewski said the contract shows
a commitment by Duke to the team
and will help in recruiting top athletes.
Wake up to a cup of coffee and The Daily Tar Heel
Sophomore guard Mark Price, though fifth in ACC scoring this season,
Is no longer the only Yellow Jacket to watch for.
