UNC wrestlers topple Tigers, 28-12, for eighth win
Men's fencing team gets victory
over Duke; women's team loses
By MIKE WATERS
Staff Writer
North Carolina's fencing teams travel
ed to Durham Tuesday night to take on
Duke. The men's team left with a 14-13
win, but the womenidn't do as well, los
ing to the Blue Devils, 9-7.
The final score didn't accurately reflect
the men's match, but the Tar Heels' per
formance was still far from impressive.
"There's a difference between being
psyched up and being ready to fence,"
coach Ron Miller said of the men's play.
"They had to discover that during the
course of the meet."
"pur guys going into the meet had a
tendency to take Duke too lightly. Com
ing immediately off a long road trip (to
Ohio State on Sunday) and without prac
tice we weren't very sharp."
The win lifted the Tar Heels' record to
6-2 overall. Captains Lonnie McCullough
and Amiel Rossabi led the way, each go
ing 3-0. The epee division bounced back
from a disappointing weekend in Ohio.
Weapon leader Bobby Bosworth won
both of his bouts, and Scott Echols fenc
ed well, winning two of three matches.
"They (the epee team) made a good
comeback and fenced very well," Miller
said. "Bobby (Bosworth) definitely got
his confidence back."
Karen Marnell was one of the few
bright spots in the women's loss to Duke.
Marnell won all four of her bouts, but no
other Tar Heel had more than one vic
tory. The Tar Heels fell behind, 3-1, after
the first round, but battled back to tie the
score at 6-6 after three rounds with one
round of fighting to go.
"We were very. tight and didn't loosen
up until the third round," Miller explain
ed. "The girls showed a good attitude,
but didn't finish it off."
Both the men's and women's squads
now turn their attention to this weekend's
important tournament at Penn State.
The Nittany Lions will play host to the
men's and women's teams from UNC,
Northwestern and Carnegie-Mellon.
William Patterson's men's team will also
be there, as will the women's team from
James Madison.
Penn State will provide the most com
petition for both Carolina squads. Penn
State's women's team is currently the top
team in the country and the men's team is
among the best in the nation, too.
"If we fence as well or a little better
than we did last weekend against Notre
Dame," Miller said, "we should have a
good chance of beating (Penn State)."

The beginning was tight, but in the
end, the North Carolina wrestling team
finished with an easy win over Clemson,
28-12, Wednesday night in Carmichael
Auditorium. Coach Bill Lam saw this vic
tory as a very important one for the Tar
Heels.
"Considering the loss to N.C. State
(21-12 last Friday in Raleigh) was very
tough on the team's spirit, we needed a
good win," he said.
But things are not going to get much
easier for the Tar Heels in the next week.
North Carolina, now 8-5 overall and 2-1
in the ACC, has two matches in the next
four days and then must prepare, for a
rematch with the Wolfpack next Thurs
day in Chapel Hill.
"I think -we're all thinking about that
match (N.C. State) in the back of our
heads,' Lam said. "We're going to be
ready, for them. But first we have to get
past this weekend."
The Tar Heels must face George
Mason Friday night in Carmichael
Auditorium (this match has not been
cancelled as previously announced), and
then must wrestle Virginia Tech at home
Sunday at 2 p.m.
Against Clemson, now 8-6 overall and
0-2 in the ACC, UNC got off to a quick
start as Chip McArdle won at 118 by a
score of 10-9, and the Tigers forfeited at
126. McArdle's match was particularly
interesting as the sophomore scored two
takedowns in the final minute, including
one with eight seconds left in the match,
to defeat Kirk Koffman. Wes Hallman
was the Tar Heels', winner at 126.
Then North Carolina hit a dry spell, as
Clemson's JotK Taylor defeated Billy-1
Christie at 134 by a score of 10-4 and
Joey McKenna beat Tim Plott at 142 by a
score of 13-5.
Those two Clemson victories brought
the Tigers to within two, with the score at
9-7. And after UNC's Jon Cardi tied
Clemson's Tom Carr. at 150, the Tar
Heels started to show their colors.
Tad Wilson had a big second period as
he pulled away from Doug Gregory of
the Tigers to take the victory at 158 by a
score of 10-2.
Bill Gaffney, who is headed to Iowa
City, Iowa, this weekend to compete in
the East-West mid-season All Star
itch
against Clemson's Mark Litts, winning by
a score of 21-0.
In the 167 division, UNC freshman
. Craig Spivey held on in a close match to .
defeat Pete Georgoutsos at 177 by a score
of 2-1. This victory sealed the team title
for UNC.
At 190, Bob Shriner put a little icing
on the cake as he scored seven points in
the final period to easily overcome the
Tigers' Gary Nivens, 13-1. Nivens, who
usually wrestles at 177, was moved up in
the hope that he might be able to surprise
Shriner.
At heavyweight, Clemson got its first
points since the tie at 150, with Brian
Raber coming from behind to defeat
Tommy Gorry by a score of 8-7.

"Obviously, we'd like to have Kenny,
because he's such a great player," Doherty
said.
"We're just going to have to do without him
f6r a while. We have quality players to put in
there. I knew Steve could play like that. He's
played like that all year. And Buzz is obviously
out of the slump he was in.
"It's a good thing coach Smith decided to
play more players this year. If not, we could
have had a problem."
Clemson coach Bill Foster was generous in
his praise of the Tar Heels.
"They're definitely the best team in
America," he said. .
"They shot the ball very well in the first
half. We wanted to collapse down low and try
to keep them away from the outside, but they
just hit everything they threw up. That was the
story."
The win boosted the Tar Heels to 18-0
overall and 8-0 in the ACC, while Clemson'
dropped to 1 1-7 and 2-4.
