Thursday, February 9, 1984The Daily Tar Heel7 Undefeated Tar Heels to face Virginia Staff and win reports For a time, his All-America guard was not shooting well. Then his freshman point guard suffered a broken wrist. But North Carolina's Dean Smith didn't panic. Smith believes his top-ranked Tar Heels will perservere. Some coaches might talk of how rough the season might be without key players or how lack of scoring punch will affect a team. "I don't think 4Hey, something's going good, so something bad is going to happen, ' Smith said in a recent interview. "1 don't have that kind of philosophy, no. We take it a day at a time, do the best we can." North Carolina is now 20-0, the 20 consecutive wins being the most since the 1957 championship season of 32-0. So far, the streak has survived tough times, but it will get another test tonight at 8 p.m. in Charlottesville against Virginia. The Tar Heels can always expect a close game with the Cavaliers (13-5 overall and 3-5 ACQ. In fact, since the start of the 1981-82 season, Virginia hasn't lost a game by more than eight points. . Virginia, which has won 59 of its last 63 games at home and stands 7-2 in Charlottesville this season, is led by senior point guard Othell Wilson. Wilson is averaging 14.6 points a game and has 66 assists to his credit. Freshman forward Tom Sheehey, a starter in every game this season for Virginia, broke loose against Maryland, scoring 27 points on 11 o16 from the Field and five of nine from the foul line. Sheeney, a native of Rochester, N.Y., is averaging 10.5 points a game, joining Wilson, Rick Carlisle (11.5) and Jim Miller (1 1.3) as double-figure scorers in the Cavaliers balanced attack. North Carolina has won four straight over the Cavaliers and six of the last seven, including a 69-66 win earlier this season in Chapel Hill. North Carolina and Virginia have made it a habit of taking second-half blowouts and turning them into tight games. The Tar Heels lost most of a 21-point lead before winning earlier this year. Last season, Michael Jordan's steal and dunk put the lid on a Tar Heel comeback after they had trailed by 16 in the second half in Chanel Hill. And 1981, in Sampson's only win in Carmichael Auditorium, the Cavaliers came back in the second half from a big deficit before winning, 80-79, in overtime. With the way Jordan and the rest of the Tar Heels are playing now. North Carolina could get a big lead and hold it and hand the Cavaliers their first big loss in four years. Jordan was shooting just below 50 percent through the first two months of the season, but not once did Smith comment on the shooting, choosing instead to talk about Jordan's overall game. Now, Jordan is shooting 53.7 percent and leading the team at 18 points per game. "December was the only time I think Michael was pressing to score," Smith said. "Since that stretch, he has played extremely well." Kenny Smith was turning heads right until the moment LSU's John Tudor blocked his slam-dunk attempt 10 days ago and sent Smith sprawling on the court, fracturing his lefywrist. Smith is out for at least four weeks, but Dean Smith says his replacement , Steve Hale, will not hurt the team. "Defensively, Steve will give us every bit the defense that Kenny did, although Kenny has certainly improved," he said. "In fact, Kenny almost won the defensive award in the LSU game. Hale doesn't possess the speed of Smith, but Dean Smith said the switch won't affect the team's performance. "I don't think they will be effective pressing us with Steve and Buzz Peterson," he said. "I would think we would get more presses, but they may pay for it with Jordan at the end of the press offense. We'll see." There had been a meeting planned for this week to talk with each player and discuss their role on the team. That meeting took on new meaning with Smith's injury. Not a time to fret, Dean Smith said, but a time tt jplan. "Fortunately, we have a lot of experience in this situation," he said. "James Worthy broke his leg in 1980. Last year, it was Buzz Peterson. In each case, ideally, you would know about that and prepare for it in November and have a certain offense in mind. "In each case, we haven't always gone on and played great," he added, "Sometimes, we've made up for it."
