Terms of Endearment, the funny-sad story of an eccentric mother and a willful daughter, scored top honors Thursday at the 56th annual Academy Award nominations, re ceiving 1 1 nominations in nine categories. The Right Stuff, a panoramic view of America's first space travelers, followed with eight nominations. Fanny and Alex ander, which Ingmar Bergman says is his . last movie, placed third with six nomina tions. As expected, Terms of Endearment dominated the nominations, collecting for best picture and for four perfor mances. Stars Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger will be competing against each other for the award for best performance by an actress in a leading role, and Jack Nicholson and John Lithgow will com pete for best performance by an actor in a supporting role. John Lithgow will compete for best per formance by an actor in a supporting role. The film was also nominated for best direction and best adapted screenplay, both by James L. Brooks. Also nominated for best picture were The Big Chill, The Dresser, The Right Stuff and Tender Mercies. Two-time winner Meryl Streep again was nominated for best actress for her performance as the doomed nuclear plant worker in Silkwood. Other nominees for best actress, besides MacLaine and Winger, were Jane Alexander of Testa ment and Julie Walters of Educating Rita. None of the nominees for best perfor mance by an actor in a leading role has won before. They are: Michael Caine in Educating Rita, Tom Conti in Reuben, Reuben, Tom Courtenay in The Dresser, Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies and Albert Finney in The Dresser. Besides Nicholson and Lithgow, nominees for best supporting actor were Charles Durning in To Be or Not to Be, Sam Shepard in The Right Stuff and Rip Torn in Cross Creek. Nominees for best performance by an actress in a supporting role were Cher in Silkwood; Glenn Close in The Big Chill, Linda Hunt in The Year of Living Dan gerously, Amy Irving in Yentl and Alfre Woodard in Cross Creek. Nominated as best director of 1983 were Brooks for Terms of Endearment, Peter Yates for The Dresser, Ingmar Bergman for Fanny and Alexander, Mike Nicnols for Silkwood and Bruce Beresford for Tender Mercies. Fanny and Alexander was one of the surprises of the nominations since foreign-language films rarely score in several categories. Besides Bergman's direction, the movie was cited as best foreign-language film, along with Carmen (from Spain), Entre Nous (France), Job's Revolt (Hungary) and Le Bal (Algeria). A prominent omission was Barbra Streisand, .who received no nominations for her producing, directing, co-writing and starring in Yentl. Return of the Jedi, by far the biggest moneymaker of 1983, was awarded four nominations for art direction, score, sound and sound effects editing. Best original screenplay nominations went to Lawrence Kasdan arid Barbara Benedek for The Big Chill, Ingmar Bergman for Fanny and, Alexander, Norah Ephron and Alice Arlen for Silk wood, Horton Foote for Tender Mercies and Lawrence Lasker and Walter F. Parkes for WarGames. Two playwrights who adapted their own stage works for the screen, Harold Pinter and Ronald Harwood, were among the nominees for best screenplay based on material from another medium. Pinter's script for Betrayal and "Harwood's for The Dresser were nominated in addition to Willy Russel's for Educating Rita, Julius J. Epstein's for Reuben, Reuben and James L. Brooks' for Terms of Endearment. Nominations for best cinematography were given to Sven Nykvist for Fanny and Alexander, Don Peterman for Flash dance, Caleb Deschanel for The Right Stuff, William A. Fraker for WarGames and Gordon Willis for Zelig. Composers nominated for best original score were Leonard Roseman for Cross Creek, John Williams for Return of the Jedi, Bill Conti for The Right Stuff, Michael Gore for Terms of Endearment and Jerry Goldsmith for Under Fire. It was obvious that 1983 was an off year for original film musicals and films which adapted existing music, since there were only three nominations for best original song score or adaptation score! Lalo Schifrin for The Sting II, Elmer Bernstein for Trading Places and Michel Legrande and Alan and Marilyn Bergman for Yentl. Since November, publicists have been waging their annual promotional blitz on behalf of Oscar-hopeful clients, taking aim at the Academy's 4,000 voting members with trade paper ads, media in terviews and special screenings. The publicity barrage, which quieted last week when Academy members con cluded their balloting for nominations, resumes in earnest after the announce ment of the nominees. Meanwhile, members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will attend special nominee screenings at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater before making final selections in 23 categories. Three honorary awards were announc ed in advance. Hal Roach, 92, producer of Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang and other comedies, will receive a special award. Producer Mike Frankovich . was named, for the Jean Hersholt humanitarian award. And Dr. John G. Frayne was voted the Gordon E. Johnny Carson will return as master of ceremonies for the 56th award presenta tions April 9 at the Los Angeles Music Center.
