Tar Heels split doubleheader with Northwestern DTHCharles Ledford By LEE ROBERTS Staff Writer North Carolina's doubleheader split with Northwestern Thursday in Boshamer Stadium was yet another ex ample of total team effort both in defeat and in victory. The Tar Heels 3-2 loss in the first game featured fielding errors, baserunning mistakes and a truckload of runners left on base. "We made a couple of mistakes, both in baserunning and in the field," coach Mike Roberts said, "and that can make a difference in a one-run game. In the early innings we weren't as aggressive as I'd like to see us." UNC took a 1-0 lead into the top of the third inning against the Wildcats, but a Northwestern single and then a one-out error by third baseman Jeff Hubbard set up a two-run double by Dan Grunhard. Tom Hildebrand's double made the score 3-1 and was all Northwestern would need. Then the baserunning mistakes began. B.J. Surhoff, who had five hits on the day and four for the game, was picked off first base after a bunt single. The Tar Heels made it a 3-2 game in the fourth on a Mike Jedziniak RBI single, but could come no closer. Matt Merullo then got a one-out single in the sixth, but was thrown out trying to go to second when the shortstop's throw went past first. Todd Wilkinson and Jedziniak followed with singles, but were left stranded. The loss overshadowed the fine pitching of UNC freshman Ken Turner, who allowed only four hits and went the dis tance for the third time this season. Turner is 2-1. Steve McGuire started the second game for North Carolina and after one-half in ning, Northwestern had four hits, UNC had committed two errors, and the Wildcats led, 2-0. It looked like it would be a long afternoon for the Tar Heels, but CON S 0 R T Friday, March 23rd. at Memorial Hall, UNC-Chapel Hill Meet Paul Winter on Saturday, March 24th at 2:00pm in the Record Bar at University Mall. Jedziniak singl ed to score Johnson, and it was a tie game. The teams traded scoreless frames until the fourth inning. With one out, Jim Stone walked and Walt Weiss singled to right, setting up Surhoff. The sophomore catcher slashed a triple to right field, scor ing both Stone and Weiss, and breaking the game open. When McGuire had a shaky fifth inn ing, Gordon Douglas came in and stop ped Northwestern cold for three innings to get the save. The win was the first since 1982 for McGuire, who has had two arm operations. The performances of McGuire and Turner underlined Roberts' feelings about how special this UNC team has been so far. "We are so team-oriented," Roberts said. "The camaraderie of this team is outstanding, and the reserves and the starters have all done an outstanding job so far. Whenever there has been an injury or a loss of players, we've pulled together and come through." Intramurals Final Basketball Rankings Residence Halls 1. Granville DW L'ecole 2. Mangum Madmen 3. Miller beer doll gets complaints The Associated Press JOHNSON CITY, Term. Actress Lee Meredith, who plays Mickey Spillane's "doll" in Miller Lite beer com mercials, says people who think her role is demeaning to women "don't have a sense of humor." Meredith says the Miller Brewing Co. has gotten complaints about her por trayal of a giggly blonde based on a character in mystery writer Spillane's Mike Hammer novels. . "It's obvious these peopleVlon't have a sense of humor," she said at a recent pro motional news conference. "In the commercials, we're making fun of ourselves and the characters. They (the producers) did that on purpose not to put down women." "I'm not what you call a seductress. I'm not trying to play up the sex. It's just fun. I think most of them (women) realize I'm not trying to put females down," she said. jfiBiS&l Discount Tickets Are Available At The Student Union! 1 "1 3M EAST FRANKLIN STREET 942-3061 LATE SHOW FRI. & SAT. jCAlLPQRL,et1:15 Ail Seats $2.25 M LATE SHOW FRI. & SAT.
