6The Daily Tar HeelMonday, March 26, 1984 Bankhead inspires confidence in UNC win (Hbe Satly (Ear litd r By LEE ROBERTS Staff Writer North Carolina third baseman Jeff Hubbard was talking about UNC's top pitcher Sunday after the Tar Heels had just defeated Maryland, 6-3, in Boshamer Stadium. "Whenever Scott Bankhead pitches," Hubbard said, "we know we'll win the game." And who was going to argue with him after yet another victory behind the pit ching of Bankhead? Bankhead did not even get the victory Sunday in fact, he stood to lose the game until the Tar Heel's four-run eighth inning but his presence on the mound kept UNC close and, more importantly, confident. "I felt strong until I tightened up a lit tle in the seventh," Bankhead said of his six and two-thirds innings, 10-strikeout performance. "My goal was to go seven innings and to keep us close since I was going with only three day's rest." Keep UNC close was what Bankhead did, holding a 1-0 lead into the sixth inn ing and leaving the game in the seventh down 2-1. The lone Tar Heel run had come on a B.J. Surhoff home run to right field leading off the bottom of the first. Hubbard led off the seventh with a home run to cut a 3-1 Terp lead in half. Then came the four-run eighth. Mike Jedziniak walked, and Surhoff singled, his third hit of the game. Walt Weiss laid down a sacrifice bunt that Terp third baseman Chris Stark threw into left field, scoring Jedziniak and Surhoff, leaving Weiss at third, and giving UNC a 4-3 lead. RBI hits by Todd, Wilkinson and Scott Johnson made it 6-3, and reliever Gordon Douglas nailed down the Terps in the ninth for his third win. Bankhead was overpowering in the first five innings, allowing only one single and striking out two batters in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. "He (Bankhead) made only two bad pitches the entire game," coach Mike Roberts said. "It was an outstanding per formance considering he was working with only three days rest." The performance was anything but a surprise to Roberts, who has come to ex pect a good performance every time out from the Reidsville junior who was third team All-America last year. "Scott is a very stable individual both on and off the field," Roberts said. "He has a very mature outlook on life and on pitching, and that makes all the players feel that they have an excellent oppor tunity to win every time he takes the mound." Call it confidence, call it cockiness, but UNC is certain it will win when Bankhead is pitching. Bankhead himself is usually confident of the outcome also. "I don't want to be cocky," Bankhead said. "I just do the best I can and the thought that I may lose never enters my mind." Why should losing enter his mind? Since he lost his first two college games as a freshman in 1982, Bankhead has a record of 20-2, including 16 straight wins since the beginning of the 1983 season. Is such a long streak ever a source of pressure for Bankhead? "I don't think about the streak," Bankhead said. "It is the furthest thing from my mind when I'm out on the mound." The main thing for Bankhead is con sistency: If he pitches consistently good baseball every game for seven, eight or nine innings, the wins and losses will fall into place. Meanwhile, his teammates' praises go on for a country mile. Sophomore catcher Surhoff, who has worked with Bankhead for two seasons and has yet to be involved in a Bankhead loss, was effusive about his teammate. "Scott has a lot of guts out there," Surhoff said. "He is a tremendous pit cher with an explosive fastball and a good slider for his strikeout pitch. I haven't seen a better pitcher in college ball. I haven't seen them all, but I haven't seen any better." Senior Todd Wilkinson agreed. "You can't say enough about the guy," Wilkinson said. "He's an outstan ding person and he's so humble. He doesn't worry about anything he's out there to pitch, and he wants the ball in all the big games." That statement is easily backed up by Bankhead's 8-0 lifetime record against ACC opponents. This could be Bankhead's last year in a North Carolina uniform. As a junior, he is eligible for the draft, and could turn professional if he desires. Pitching coach Howard McCullough spoke about the possibility of Bankhead going pro. "Scott is signable and definitely wor thy of the opportunity to play profes sional baseball," McCullough said. "But he's intelligent enough that he's not going to go out unless it is a good situation for him. He will have the full support of the coaching staff, whatever his decision is." PS ......
